shareThe story has more holes then a drainer you use when cooking, BUT put that aside for a moment. As Roger Ebert said (paraphrasing) "just look at it". In terms of production values and execution, the movie is a masterpiece. It has such a strong, distinct look to it that the movie is endlessly intriguing from a visual perspective. The use of color, the makeup effects, the costuming, the sets & set decoration, the camera compositions, all of it is incredibly striking to look at.
If this had come out during the 70's and had Dario Argento's name attached to it, it would be considered a horror classic.
Also:
-the casting is absolutely spot on. Perfectly cast right down the line.
-the movie has an obvious affection for the world of horror in general as many different eras of horror have been incorporated from the early days of silent movies right up to when the movie came out. The story references, visual ques, various embellishments have been incorporated rather seamlessly throughout the entire running time. That's no easy task, because when horror movies try to do something like that they either come off as too dependent of the movies that inspired them or smart alecky.
-not one minute is wasted. Every scene does something to establish the story, the visuals or who the characters are. There's no filler in this movie what so ever.
