gratuitous sex scenes

I liked the movie. But, the graphic sexual scenes added absolutely nothing to the story line.

I would have liked to share this movie with my daughter (18), because the underlying story and suspense is great, but, I would be so humiliated to watch this with her, and she with me.

I can't understand why movie makers feel the need to add raunchy sex scenes to their films.

Sure part of the twist was the wife of one brother was having an affair with the other brother. But did we need to see the entire sexual act? We can get the idea without visuals.

I think the director was trying to convey everything was sleazy. The sex was sleazy, the character were sleazy and disgusting with their scheme to rob from their parents and that kind of thing. At least that's what I got.

I don't like dragged-on sex scenes either. A kiss here and there, door shut and next scene with the two alluding to the fact they had sex is fine.

i don't think he was "*beep* Marissa Tomei in the ass".

Actually, that seemed to be the emotional high point of the entire film. The most optimistic passage.

Seriously - what was sleazy or unusual about doggy style sex. I'm serious here. 'I'd imagine more folk enjoy non missionary style sex such as that from behind.

Everyone is so cool about sex here - fab. I wonder how man folk saying how uptight the Op is has a ally watched quite explicit sex scenes with their kids.

reply

I agree with you. Also the opening scene is not necesary at all...

Bunch of prudes up in here. Sexual oppression abound,

No, I dont have trouble with sex scene on the movies.. when the scene is necesary... If I need to watch a movie just for the sex I go for another kind of movies.

reply

The director thought they were necessary. Lol. I think its amazingly hilarious that you can just go: they werent necessary...

Why werent they necessary?

I missed them cuz I wacthed A TV cut... :'(

You Are a prude. Simple. Accept It.

There is no connection between what Susan said and what you said. I, as a man, don't mind sex scenes when they're done tastefully. I also don't mind them when they're shown to make a point, as in this movie.
However, just because I don't mind the sex scene in the movie doesn't mean I wouldn't feel uncomfortable seeing it with my 18 year old daughter. I don't have a daughter, by the way, but I can put myself in the previous poster's shoes and imagine that, yes, that would be awkward.
There is a certain relationship between a parent and child where something like sex is uncomfortable to discuss or watch on a TV show or movie. If you don't understand that, then I would suggest you have a difficulty in understanding how real relationships work in a family.
Also, as for the US and how we compare to the rest of the world, my position would be that we may be the last holdouts for decency and morality (even though we fail at those things an awful lot). So I'm not concerned that other countries "laugh at us." I've been laughing at other countries for a long time now, so the feeling's mutual.

Mr Clever:
Good post.

Please don't think the rest of the world is laughing at the US; they're not, they're just envious of its accomplishments and the fact that it's not a barbaric relic from the Stone Age in the same manner that theirs usually are.

I'd say both. If you follow the link she posted, you'll see. Warning: it's XXX-type stuff.

Sometimes I recommend movies to my family when I think they are good.
This wasn't a bad movie but I won't recommend it to my mother or she may get the impression I'm trying to make her watch a porn movie with that explicit sex scene as intro.
I also felt the explicit sex scenes were unnessesary to the movie as a whole.
The only reason I can think of is that the director wanted to enstrengthen the betrayal of Hank's relationship with Andy's wife.
But even that is far fetched.

im going to have to disagree here marisa tomei living out her inner porn star on film priceless its like the older she gets the better looking she get's

only gross part is seeing phillip hoffmans fat naked ass hoffmans a good actor but with his clothes on.He needs to learn to keep his clothes for the love of god no matter how much money is thrown his way.
it doesn't look good at all

i love how people try and rationalize graphic sex scenes in film .like there's some how some deeper meaning the director was trying to depict .sex is sex plain and simple.

i don't even know why they gave marisa tomei lines..shes got a killer body and face and is very sexual person.Just give her scenes like these .It suits a beauty like her perfectly

reply

Sex is not plain and simple. Andy was railing her out from behind... while STARING IN THE MIRROR. it shows what type of person he is. Have you seen "American Psycho"? He does the same thing. Its like they cant live in the moment and be normal.. they have to stare at themselves in the mirror while %#(-ing to feel powerful and good about himself. Its weird. I truly believe it added to the realism and overall theme of inner crisis.

reply

I may have to watch it again but I didn't think the sex was gratuitous. It was smart to open the film at the peak of Andrew and Gina's relationship even if they happened to be having sex. Besides, now that filmmakers can show sex without getting a NC-17 why not exploit it when you have a beautiful actress like Marisa Tomei?

Sex in film is really harped on too much. I realize there are ways to imply sex without actually showing it, like the sex scenes in casablanca, but nudity is a aesthetic choice. If it makes you feel weird then maybe that says more about your insecurities than the exploitative artist whose showing you a intimate moment between two characters who love each other. And what better way to show the audience a characters vulnerable side?

Sex and nudity is simply a color in your paint palate. Some artists use red, others don't. Either is acceptable.

These are some movies of mine. Enjoy!

i feel the reason it makes people weird is because in a way when you show the more explicit nature its insulting to peoples intelligence.Their just used to seeing explicit scenes like that in a pornography not a legitimate film .at least that's the way i interpret it.

The subtly type sex in casablanca is what people are used to .back then i'm sure if you wanted to see some real raunchy sexy stuff that's what strip joints were for and pornography .in the case of "BEFORE THE DEVIL" just like movies similar to it .it doesn't deal with sex or nudity on and artistic level at all .It just blatantly shows it (just like reality t.v programming) .which is fine by me Marisa tomei naked having raunchy sex love it,(i love it even more that i can see that scene on Slutload, definitely in my top ten ) .
i don't consider it art though .furthest thing from it .

It really just come's down to marketability you got a big name hot leading lady whos already a sex symbol, willing to get nude .it helps sell the movie plain and simple when i'm watching a movie with a really good story line in it and it results to explicitness in its theme of sex .if im really into the story its insulting because i have and imagination .ive had sex many times over the course of my life unless im watching a porn to get my rocks off.

I just dont need a reminder of the whole process step by step. after all isn't that the beauty of film that it sums up everything .with simplicity and subtly .Its very condescending to show something like that . i think that's why to get back to your point about sex in film being harped on ..people may feel weird about seeing this .To them this type stuff belongs in a certain genre of film that most people watch in the private of their homes .they aren't used to or just don't wont or need to see this anywhere else but there downloaded porn from the internet or their private stash of porn vids at home .

my god - are people really this prudish? - grow up - if youre so repulsed by sex, you've been brought up unfairly

reply

Definitely must agree. Sex is the most important part of human life, and it is terribly unfortunate that, especially in the USA, attitudes about sex are so prudish. If we were more open about sex and discussing sex with our children, then we wouldn't have simpering fools like Santorum running for President at all.

reply

Marissa Tomei in real life has had doggy style sex in real life, so have you and guess what...if not already your daughter will get it from behind to. It's strong sex and to the point but my point is we have all tried doggy style at least once in our life and is natural and is actually quite hot. Besides....18?

reply

I am puzzled at the ignorance of the posters on this subject, because if you listen to what Andy is saying to Gina after their sex scenes you will realise he has not been able to 'finish' -a key motivation in the robbery is the belief Andy has that if he and Gina can go back to Rio where they had the best sex of their lives, he will also be restored to the condition he was in then: virile, successful and happy. His drug habit as well as his embezzlement and the failure to connect with his father have 'sapped' his masculinity: the sex Gina has with Hank is instant, temporary but doesn't satisfy her emotionally: ok maybe you don't need to see an unattractive male body in the nude -actually a rare moment of realism given the cliche of people getting nude and having sex also having lovely bodies: but its a core factor in the plot. That Hank has replaced him as Gina's more successful lover also chimes in with his belief his father gave more licence to Hank to fail and loved him more. Andy has become impotent, and a coward which is why he doesn't go on the heist himself. The sex is the code that helps unravel this, as most men will never admit to being useless in bed.

Well said, rue.

I personally got a "beauty and the beast" feeling during the opening scene which flowed really well with the vibe of the movie for me. The movie was extremely well done with amazing acting by everyone involved...but it may be the most amount of tension I've ever felt while watching a movie. It was torture, but at the same time I couldn't stop watching because it was also awesome.

And yeah...it's just sex. Big friggin' deal. We've got an amazingly uptight culture in the States over the sex act. The human species in general is the only species on this planet who feels the need to hide our genitals from sight and treat sex like it is "dirty". Other species have sex right out in the open...in front of their kids even! Oh my! Are baby zebras "scarred for life"?

We even make up stories about "storks" to explain how babies get here for our kids and give them dolls that are "smooth down there" to play with. Elbows and knees are ok...but we can't even think about those "bad parts".

I can't understand why people get all bent out of shape over sex and nudity in movies.

Sex is an act. Kissing is an act. Punching someone is an act. Shooting someone is an act. Calling someone an *beep* is an act. Telling someone you love them is an act.

As long as that act serves a dramatic function, it is not gratuitous.

People need to grow up.

"Because if you listen what Andy is saying to Gina after their sex scene you will realize he has not been able to ´finish´".

What´s he saying there? I couldn´t really make out at least half of the dialogue in that opening scene. However, Hoffman does look suspiciously happy and relieved afterwards for a man who could not "finish"; I´d expect an impotent fella look more like Bill Pullman does in Lost Highway.

Not everything needs to be suitable for an 18 year old to watch.

Some important conversations in real life take place when people are naked. And sex acts have bearing on a lot of other things in real life.

Let us adults that recognize that and are not going to have our development warped by it enjoy a little sexuality mixed in with plot, character, etc. while people who want to watch movies with their children look for material to suit them.

Great post - should be permanently etched across the IMDB page.
