Why did the father investigate the murder?

Why did the father investigate the murder of his wife? The man who shot her was already dead so I don't understand why the father kept digging so much in the case.

There weren't any reports of a fleeing car so he couldn't have known that a henchman was involved.

I'm not sure he knew himself what 'exactly' it was he was after, but he just couldn't believe that this guy from an entirely different part of town ended up in his jewelry store at random. He just wanted clarity, which he felt was missing.

Well, that is odd and still makes no sense. So, he went insane with obsession which coincidentally was well founded obsession? 

When I managed a copy shop I got robbed by 2 guys from a city about 20 miles away. I wondered, "who robs a copy shop?!", but never wondered why they were from another city. You don't sh!t where you eat. Keeping distance(geographical and other) from your crimes is a good idea unless you want to get caught.

It may be odd, but it still makes sense. He was old and grieving and had a hunch something wasn't quite right, which of course he was right about.

Very good. But brick not hit back!

Indeed. If it weren't for coincidences of some sort or another, many (great) movies would not be in existence. And this one isn't even much of a stretch; considering the devastation the old codger underwent, it ain't much of a surprise he'd want to investigate further rather than readily accept the maddening randomness of it all.

He can't believe the robber came from a different area, but he can believe his son was behind it all...

One seems far more likely than the other. His son could have just been into some shady business.

Just because he had interest in fencing hot jewelry does not mean he was in on it. Even more-so, just because the robber was from another area does not mean there is some intricate conspiracy afoot.
Crazy as phvk.

I'd say it would have been THE true coincidence if the robbery of the jewelry store and his son seeking out a fence only a few days prior didn't have anything to do with each other. And, anyway, with the kind of tunnel vision the old dude had developed, he wasn't interested in getting additional proof - he'd made up his mind.

^this, doesn't the dad say "why would a guy from Red Hook ro a shop ther"

I would add the police being indifferent to his case compelled him to investigate

reply

I think there are 2 parts to this:

1) Like said in the movie, and by others here, the guy was from far away and it was suspicious he even knew about that shop...

2) The father was really angry, but with his wife's killer dead, he had no one left to be angry at, so he had to believe there an accomplice he could redirect his anger towards, then all that was left was to find him/her.

reply

Pretty simple to me

The FATHER had been in the jewelry business as a thief, He Knew the fence, hadn't seen him since going legit
BUT
Knew he'd know who did it
The Fence turned over the sons card to make it all hurt more
