The film has disturbed me more than I could ever have imagined. I deeply encourage anyone thinking about watching this film no too, one of the biggest regrets I have. It was more grotesque, shocking, sick and horrible than any other film out there, and I cannot believe it got through censorship. Whilst the acting and thoughts behind it are brilliant, this by no means should have been a film - Rape is something more horrendous than anything in this world, and that scene will never leave my mind.
the rape scene was very disturbing, and hard to watch. For me the head-bashing was actually worse, i felt like i was going to throw up. Having said that, i think the rape scene was integral to the film....the intense explicit head bashing could have been less intense and still manage to not take away from the film.
"Rape is more horrendous than anything in this world?
I don't know, the holcaust was hardly fun. I could think of many more worst things than rape. "
I think that the Mongols used to toss young men to wrestle with starving boars... for entertainment.
I know Rape is a Horrifying experience. But we need to not slip into exxageration, and say that it is the Worst thing anyone can ever do. There are torturers out there that skin their captives alive for fun.. others cut parts off their bodies little by little... while still trying to keep their victims alive. There are people that feed their victims feces...etc...
I think when you go to the extreme of " the Most horrific thing ever" type of commentary you do a disservice. We need to remember it is a Horrible experience. but there are things out there that are worse.
I thought the ending was really beautiful with the kids running around, the rape scene was uncomfortable and the beggining was just gross but as someone already said a Serbian Film is a kind of film that crosses the line, while Irreversible has a reason and a plot for the bad things to happen. (Also a Serbian Film but... newborn porn was wayyyy too much)
Serbian and Irreversible are completely different genres. So I would not treat both in same way.
Irreversible is a drama, so it need a decent plot and much better acting. And have it. The rape scene was very well done, Bellucci deserve a prize for that, is not easy do such scenes and even harder direct it and make a long take. Noé, Prestia nd Bellucci deserves all prizes for this scene. Only great actors and directors could do it without transform the movie in a "Serbian film".
Serbian film is horror, a horror movie can have a terrific plot and acting (like Martyrs) but most of times horror movies is not compromised with good acting or direction. Serbian film was a brutal critic against Serbian society and government and they did it very well, but as a horror movie. And for me that's where the director make his point... only a horror movie could shock and make a mirror of the violence and hypocrisy he's criticizing.
Irreversible for me was a very good movie, but the climax ends after the rape scene because I notice I will not see a brutal vengeance as the bastard deserved (some tortures like Martyrs would be good for him). But that's the point of the movie and if it was not in reverse order it would be probably just one more graphic horror movie (and maybe directed by a horror movies director, without Bellucci, Cassel...)
Only nazi countries censure art. And if someone live in countries that support such crimes (censure art is a crime) make your human rights be respected and get the uncut version from a country that respect freedom and human rights, no government have the right to say what I can do, think and/or watch.
Worser than censorship is the hypocrisy of countries like UK. The government thinks they are kings of human rights while BBFC commit crimes against human rights every time they censure a film without reason. Grotesque, Serbian Film, Soldier Blue... all censured by BBFC while UK government pretends to worry about freedom of Libyans.
And I'll watch this movie today, here's perfectly legal and the UNCUT dvd is available, but if wasn't I would import the Uncut version and say for my government: "eat my shorts".
A serbian Film was ok but they ruined trying to over imprress me with the ending that was already done after the climax but whatever if you praise it idc i only liked it. Irreversible worked good that way because even tho you dont know the character of Monica Belucci when the rape scen happens, after it you get to know her well, and when you see her imagining herself touching a big belly because of her baby its like horrible that you know whats gonna happen to her yet she seems with a lot of hope for the future.
Grotesque was grotesque in the sense of "unbeautiful gore" so badly done and the plot was ruined at about min 60 until the ending, serbian film is much more gore porn than horror i was never scared at all just disgusted, yet i liked it. Also you are talking about anarchy and thats annoying... i dont think that the goverment not wanting you to watch a baby getting *beep* by a fat man and then thrown away as if it was crap is something everyone should watch some people might find it "cool" as you probably did, and not get the sense of the film just find blood cool. And then its so much more fun to watch Tokyo Gore Police.
I think this kind of movie should not be even permitted to be done.
This movies has nothing good about it, and it is not a drama nor horror movie in any way, it is just the horrifying visions of an idiot, put in cinema, nothing else.
This movies only inspires violence, disgust, and sort of bad feelings and emotions, depending on the person who is watching.
I strongly advice you not to see it, you will not like it, unless you are a sick freak.
Absolutely love this movie. The rape scene is ace - one scene you can keep going back to. And I love seeing that guy get his face smashed in with that fire extinguisher.
How dare the OP tell other ppl not to watch this, in fact, telling someone not to watch something is stripping them of their human rights which is far more disturbing and shocking than anything this film can throw at you.
Cop:"You think you're Rambo!" Tango (Stallone): "Rambo's a pussy!"
Nobody is being forced to not watch the movie, so your statement is not correct in that regard.
People also have the human right to express what they think about a movie, and have the right to say if other people should watch it; people do not, however, have the right to prohibit other human being from watching a movie, even one so horrible as this, in my opinion.
This movie is, in fact, an horrible set of, to put it simply, atrocious scenes, and although I love Monica B., and although her performance in this movie was very real, I hated what this movie stands for, which is, in my opinion, nothing worth seeing.
This movie is one of those stupid horror/drama movies that have no content, just horrible scenes that teach nothing.
Nobody, in his right mind, would like this movie. Movies are supposed to entertain, no horrify people to this extent.
I do hope people open their eyes and see this movie for what it really is - dreadful.
If you don't like this kind of film, why are you watching it?
It's really not possible that you just happened to stumble upon it on Disney Channel. Before you saw this film, you either:
-must have heard or read about its subject -you must have known that it was violent and disturbing -at least, you must have seen the poster or the cover with the warnings.
However:
-you intentionally chose to watch a violent and disturbing film, which means you like this kind of stuff.
But then you were disturbed to the extent that you came here to complain. Which means:
-You're not as tough as you think.
Which is the main reason of your complaint. Not the movie itself.
There is another option. He is trying to be politically correct. What I find trully offensive is Lyon111's position that " this Movie should never have been permitted to be made" simply because he did not like it.
Sorry, but I am the boss of me, and will watch what I wish... I reccomend that lyon stick to disney movies... but.. stay away from the Lion King... the Wildebeest scene may be too strong for you. And we will see you here talking about how the Lion King shpuld ever have been allowed to be made... How about Bambi? what next?
I explain why I said that, despite being a cold affirmation, just like yours.
I film is supposed to entertain, not frighten you with sick pictures and visions like the ones clearly demonstrated in the film in question.
Films are supposed to be teach you something, and also to make you feel something worth feeling.
Tell me something, what did you actually learn with that film that is so worth while' Nothing, for me, in my own experience, I don't know about you.
What did you actually feel that was so worth while for you? Nothing, for me.
Films nowadays are not what they were, actually, a long time ago, films were created with another vision in mind, even though there were many subjects, like horror, action, western, romance, drama.
Films nowadays, have sick visions, nothing worth while seeing nor talking about, even though I am in this precise moment, and the ones that do think that the film was a good experience, that is just because they do not have a clue of what films are supposed to do.
Enough talking for me, I have no more time. I hope you open your eyes to what has happened to films, and really think about it, and perhaps you'll see that only a very limited number of films nowadays are really worth seeing, if you want to get a truly good experience, in the sense that you have learned something worth while, and that the film made you feel something that was worth while and useful to YOUR LIFE.
Yes I concur, a film is supposed to entertain it's audience for the most part. But that is just one of many reasons why a movie or a film is made.
The purpose of a film can also be to educate, to arouse, to bring a point across, to tell about a person or a certain story or to document a specific situation etc...
What the director intended to show was an extreme situation that could happen to anyone anywhere in everyday life. A rape is a horrifying violation of a man or a woman's free will and it is one of the most evil and sinful acts a person can commit in a society.
However, despite the fact that sexual assault is such a sickening crime, it needs to be discussed in society. And what did this film do? Yes, it MAKES US TALK about rape and violence and what should happen to the perpetrator or how justice should be done upon him. How should he be punished for such a crime? Why do people not help the victim, when they see someone being raped (as this was also a scene in the film). If films like these are never made, if books about situations like these are never written, then people will very rarely, if ever, talk about extreme situations like these.
The purpose of this film was to show how an extreme situation like the rape of someone we love, can affect us. Noè portrayed this insatiable thirst for revenge very well. Most of the audience could relate to the fury that was developing inside of Marcus after what happened to his wife. And you cannot tell me, that if your wife/girlfriend/sister/mother or whoever would have been violated in such a way, that you would not thirst for revenge or at least get furious because of the person that committed the crime.
The film is not supposed to make people aggressive and start beating the crap out of each other. If people tend to get violent just by watching a movie, then there is something very wrong with them - and it is not because of the movie!
To simply say that this movie has no good aspects about it and that it only inspires violence is simply a stupid thing to say. It brings numerous points across. How many people could ever thought about how horrific a rape can be? I will bet a million bucks that not even 10% of the people that watched this film imagined a rape to be so horrific and violent. The film also portrays the way the family and friends of the victim feel. Their entire world collapses! And through the artistic work of Noé it was portrayed very well and extremely realistic. People were able to relate to how it must be like to lose someone you love to such a horrible act. And then of course, there are the great performances of the actors in this film, which is also something admirable.
If you did not get the message this film was trying to send, then I feel sorry for you. But everyone should be entitled to create his or her own opinion about a movie or a book or whatever and that is why one should never tell people not to watch something. Sure, you can tell people that you do not recommend it because you did not like it and that is fine, but you should let people decide for themselves!
You tell me that I should not say my recommendation about the film, but that is against the human rights, I am sure you know which one.
You tell me that my affirmation is stupid and that i have no idea what a movie is for.
You tell me that I have no clue to what a film is for and so forth.
-------
If you tell me those things, you loose all the credit to tell me whatever you want to tell me, because you do the following:
Disrespect my human rights - freedom of speech; Do not respect my opinion - freedom of speech; Offend me by calling me stupid and my acts as stupid - crime agaisnta person's integrity; Et cetera.
This is just to make a point. The point is that you criticize me for something that you do far worst, which is to insult me, insult my opinions, and my freedom of speech, my integrity, etc. etc. etc.
If you had been humble and not arrogant, I might have respect for you, but like that, I just can not, and I am the one that is sorry for you, for you not being more adult in answering and/or replying to a person's opinion, which clearly demonstrates how young you should be and/or how lack of principles you should have not.
"This movies has nothing good about it, and it is not a drama nor horror movie in any way, it is just the horrifying visions of an idiot, put in cinema, nothing else."
I disagree with you. As many others have stated in other posts "the horrifying visions of an idiot, put in cinema" are the reflex of this twisted world we all live in. I agree that they are far too visual and not everyone can bare to watch those scenes completely; even Gaspar Noe walked out of a movie because of a rape scene in the middle of the plot. The idea of making a movie backwards and putting the gruesome and hard to see scenes at the beginning is brilliant because after that you know there is going to be ameliorating scenes. This movie does leave a message, and for me it was that as much as you seek revenge things can't be undone.
Although It may inspire disgust, anger, it also inspire consciousness (awareness) in our lives. It can open our eyes to the real world out there and teach us to be more cautious and I'm not referring just to women here but to everyone, rape is not a gender biased crime. This movie does inspire anger, but violence? I don't think so. If you are not a violent person this movie will not make you a violent one. As the director said "Each member of the audience handles the movie as he/she wants".
"I strongly advice you not to see it, you will not like it, unless you are a sick freak."
I personally liked it, for me it is a remarkable film. Am I a sick freak? I'm not, It does not make me ghoulish morbid person. I do respect others opinions about this film and therefore I expect to be respected. I respect yours and that's the purpose of this boards, to make discussions, as well as the purpose of this film.
One interesting point of this film is that the rape scene was more directed by Monica than by Noe. Curious, isn't it?
(Sorry for any misspelled word or grammatical mistake. Spanish is my native language)
I am an orthodox Christian and am often irritated, both morally and artistically, by depictions of violence simply to fill theatre seats. However, this film was brilliant, not only artistically, but morally and socio/humanly as well.
This movie not only told a story, but also taught a lesson, one that is incalculably valuable. The lesson is, Men cannot afford to be cavalier about life if they have a woman they love and are responsible for wellbeing.
Vincent Cassell's character gets high, inebriates himself, and because of his, 'Hey, its all good, just havin' a rocking time' attitude toward drunkenness, his woman was horribly tortured and his child probably died - as well may his cherished girlfriend.
We men have not the luxury of taking our eyes off the ball, so to speak. We can never relax our vigilance, leave our watch towers, 'take time off' from our jobs as protectors of women and children. The world is too dangerous, most especially for women and children. If we do - as this film so brutally and powerfully points out - THEY suffer for it.
I almost stopped watching it because of the erratic camera work at the beginning, thinking it was just another one of those idiot directors trying to 'be different' and avant-garde. I'm so thankful I trusted the director on this one and stuck with it.
Yes, it is brutal, extremely. I even had to close my eyes shortly after the rape scene began until it was finished. If you aren't strong enough for such a film, you should take the advice of the original poster and not watch it. But if you can stomach this movie, there is an almost Divine and desperate message that this film carries for those with loved ones of the feminine sex.
I don't drink nor do I do drugs, but Irreversible brought even me to a higher level of sobriety with regard to the dangers of the seemingly innocuous vicissitudes of our daily lives.
To be sure, I will hold those women and children I care about closer to me from now on, and may God let me never blink.
