Daredevil himself is simply an underrated character. It seems that only real hardcore comic book fans appreciate him. To me, he should be right up there in popularity with the general public as Batman, Iron Man, and Spider-Man. The character has had some of the best writing of any mainstream superhero character of EVER. And that includes Batman and Spider-Man who for my money have the biggest wealth of truly great stories/runs/era's. Stan Lee's original run in underrated, then we have Kesel, Nocenti, Thomas, Smith, Diggle, Miller, Bendis, Brubaker, Waid....that's one hell of a pedigree for a "B-list" character. There is something about Matt Murdock that brings out the best in writers. Hell, Millers, Bendis', Brubakers and Waid's work are all among my favorite stuff I've ever read.
I think the general audience finds him lame. A blind superhero? Sounds dumb and gimmicky to the average non-comic reader, but if more people knew the extent of his powers the whole "blind superhero" thing wouldn't sound so lame.
The film is underrated to, especially the DC. It definitely has flaws, wont deny that. I think doing the Elektra story was a bad move and sometimes it's tone if off balance, but I think it largely captures the grit and tone of the Miller/Bendis stuff and Affleck is sadly made fun of for no good reason. He's not an ideal Murdock, but I see the character in him. The CGI has dated but the action itself is great and it's one of the strongest origin stories yet made.
