Blade Runner for one. The final cut being the best.
shareI can only think of one "Unrated" or "Director's" cut that's actually made a movie worse... That was Dead Silence.
Otherwise, for the most part, the director's vision is always the way to go.

Watchmen
shareApocalypse Now Redux is terrible compared to the theatrical cut!

Once Upon a Time in America is the definitve movie that is so much better directors cut style
...Blade Runner gets an honorable mention...
Apocolypse Now and The Outsiders are the best examples of directors cuts being worse

Agreed...the theatrical cut of Blade Runner is difficult to watch because of the cringe-inducing voiceover, but the Final Cut is hands-down the best sci-fi motion picture of all time, in my opinion. It's always been clear that somewhere in the Theatrical Cut, there was a brilliant movie struggling to get out, but it was buried under so much needless garbage, it took 25 years to really reach its full potential.
Though the Director's Cut was a damn sight better than the Theatrical, as well. I think the Director's Cut fixed most of the Theatrical's problems, but without the finesse of Ridley Scott's guiding hand.
I'd say Daredevil and Ghost Rider are both aided greatly by their added footage.
RoboCop feels a bit more complete.
The director's cut of Saw III (not the unrated cut, the director's cut) is a lot better, and runs about 15 minutes longer than the theatrical cut, many of the extended scenes adding a lot to the storyline with Amanda.
The Last Emperor
Ade due damballa, GIVE ME THE POWER I BEG OF YOU!
Yeah, they've mostly been mentioned
add Almost Famous
the DC of Walk Hard sucked, but the TC is very funny.
I watched both the Dir Cut and the original release, and this is one time where I'm for the original release. The director's cut was way too long dudes.

King Arthur! The TC is a lame PG13, rushed pile of crud. The DC is longer, and is full of decapitations and sprays of blood. In the end The Director's Cut is not quite on par with Braveheart and Gladiator but pretty close.
Still the fate of the Fixer in the movie was unresolved in the director's cut. The Fixer's fate could be resolved in movie sequels or prequels or even back stories. The fate of Wesley Owen Welch is resolved in the director's cut.
shareDCs that are better are:
Alien 3
All 3 Lord of the Rings movies, with Return of the King the best, (ignoring Saruman in the theatrical made it almost unwatchable)
Blade Runner (finally the right # of replicants!)
Only movie I've seen that was worse was Apocalypse Now, in the original Robert Duvall was untouchable. In the director's cut he flies around begging for his surfboard back.
I don't understand how anyone could think there's not much difference between the two cuts. The plot is more coherent (you actually know why they come for Kingpin at the end of the film now) and even the action is more intense. The fights are longer! I just love the Director's Cut of this film. Why didn't they just release this version unaltered in the first place? I thought it was smart, well written, well directed, and struck just the right tone for the material. The director's cut is more focused and features a better tone and a far more coherent story. Everything is in service of the story or the characters or creating a persuasive reality. You're pulled into a story about people and about the defender of Hell's Kitchen. That's what the theatrical cut was missing.
shareFrom everything I've heard the studio wanted a shorter "quicker paced" movie.
shareSince this is an old thread I guess not many people have been thinking about this recently, but...
WATCHMEN! The DC is vastly superior to the TC!!! Watchmen is probably my favorite comic book film of all time, at this point. But it's all because of the DC. I know this opinion is controversial, but I love it.
And I will agree that, although I hadn't seen Daredevil in years, I generally held a pretty negative opinion of it (having only seen the TC, one time). Just a few days ago I watched the DC and was extremely impressed. The exact same thing happened when I re-watched Blade the other day. I just couldn't believe I had been holding a negative opinion of these movies for all these years.
Then I watched Blade 3, which I previously had thought was good... and now I think it is complete s**t. They tried to ham it up with dumb humor and it completely ruined the general "bad ass" feel of the Blade franchise.
Agreed about SAW 3.

alien 3
the abyss (biggest improvement from original ever along with daredevil)
daredevil (who would have thunk)
Blade runner
LOTR trilogy
"Halloween" 2007 Directors Cut and "Halloween II" 2009 Directors Cut are much better movies than their original Theatrical Cuts. The characters are a lot more developed and the storylines are ultimately more tragic especially when watched back to back.
shareI haven't seen the Daredevil cut yet, but so far, the best I've ever seen are Once Upon a Time in America, The Outsiders and Superman II. All three directors cuts are completely different movies, and much better ones.

Sometimes a man can meet his destiny on the road he took to avoid it.
I agree with those who suggest that the following films are superior in the Directors' Cute/Alternate versions.
" Terminator 2 : Judgement Day " ( 1991 ) - the additional footage adds noticeable to what is already a good character study by science fiction dystopia film standars
" Superman " ( 1978 ) - the 2001 DVD release; for all of it being only 8 minutes of additional footage, it does add noticeable to improving an understanding of an already good films' explanation for why/how/when the characters do what they do
" Daredevil " ( 2003 ) - of course; though why any scenes had to be cute as 2 of them were to accomodate the new footage I am not sure
" Halloween " ( 1978 ) - the additional material added to the television version ; this realy improves on explaining why Michael does what he does later in the film/film sequels/film series
I agree as well that the following films are worse for such a change in their Directors Cut/Alternate versions.
" Star Wars " ( 1977 ) - Han did NOT shoot first, we did NOT not that many addtional aliens in addition to the cleaning up of the special effects, if you were going to include the Jabba footage as well as the second Biggs scene why not include all of the other deleted footage as well; 'nuff said
" Elektra " ( 2005 ) - though I haven't seen the Directors' Cut yet the theatrical film had such a lousy script that I doubt anything could have actually made this in its' own right a better movie; Jennifer Garner is the only reason to see it as such
Other Directors' Cuts I liked
" Independence Day " ( 1996 ) - the additional footage actually gave the characters some characters to study ; 'nuff said
" JFK " ( 1991 ) - the additional footage did a good job of helping to clarify Oliver Stones' case ( or lack thereof, depending on your point of view ) for conspiracy ; as such, it might not be a good example of an investigation method, but it is an improvement on an already good movie
Anybody want a peanut ?
- Fezzik, " The Princess Bride " ( 1987 )
I must be one of the few people who actually prefer the theatrical cuts of Aliens and The Abyss. Also prefer the Lester version of Superman 2. Much as i liked Donner's version, the turning the world back (again!) was a major cop-out. Much prefer the end of Lester's film.
"I felt my pecker flutter once, like a pigeon havin' a heart attack"
Duck You Sucker/Fistful of Dynamite
Alien 3

Daredevil the director's cut is actually a very good ORIGINAL film and far better than the theatrical release. I now only own the director's cut because I ignore the other version.
