Director's Cut far superior than original and

what other films have versions that are superior to the original/theatrical ones?

example. i hear Alien 3's Assemblys Cut is by far better than the original

reply

Stay Alive, the theatrical cut is complete *beep* but the director's cut is actually a decent movie.

I am Jack's smirking revenge.

reply

kingdom of heaven. the theatrical cut is mediocre but the directors cut makes it one of ridley scotts better films

reply

Alien 3, a masterpiece in every form, but the director's cut is incredible.
Is it me or are ALL of these by Fox?
Hmm, yeah, thought so...

Watch the Director's Cut. It is miles better than that crap that was released in theaters. If Fox just didn't screw around with the project so much and let Fincher have his vision when he was signed on it could've been, in my opinion, the best in the franchise

reply

The first Star Trek Movie!

The theatrical release was an abortion, the directors cut fixes all the shortcomings.

reply

Nice, Keep them coming people i would've never known about these otherwise.

Yeah, I never understood the Daredevil bashings (I always thought it was awesome) because I've only seen the director's cut! So it must be good.

-Alien 3 all the way. I rank the assembly cut up there with the first two films.
-Daredevil obviously. Much more character driven.
-The Punisher: The extended cut just gives the story more depth and the outcome is more satisfying.
-The Abyss: Probably the best Directors Cut of a film ever made.
-Kingdom of Heaven: Tied with The Abyss as one of the best directors cuts ever.
-Aliens and Terminator 2 extended cuts are also better.
-Sin City: Not any major changes, but they stories feel more whole.
-Death Proof: Not many people agree with me, but I find the extended cut to be much much better than the theatrical.
-Halloween 2008: People hate this, but I liked it a lot. Once again, the story is more fleshed out.

Thats all I can think of for now

reply

Thx! and which punisher film do you mean, the new one?

reply

Yes, the new one.

Two of you guys beat me to the punch here, but I had to contribute. Kingdom of Heaven was over-long, boring and actually felt unfinished in the theaters. The DC, though much longer than the theatrical version, was amazing. While the Theatrical Version felt rushed and unfinished, the DC was a well-fleshed and immersive epic. I've not seen a more drastic difference between a theatrical version and a Director's Cut.

People say that Payback's Director's Cut is also noteworthy, since it is literally a different film altogether, not just a scene or two added or something. Different music, different image for the general picture, different mood and feelings from the characters, many, many scenes changed, different actors for a character (One is even a woman whereas he was a man in the TC), and ofcourse a completely different ending.
I have not seen it myself, but people like it, or at least, well...enjoy it as a different version of the same story.
Generally, a new redefinition of the term Director's Cut (Also because it was taken from him and turned into the TC by Mel Gibson, which is not bad because i like it AND we get 2 different version).

reply

I've seen Payback's DC, and I hated it! If you love the original as I do, you'll hate the DC. Also, another DC that sucked, was Dark City. To me the best DC ever, must be Blade Runner...just perfect.

reply

Guess he means the "first" one (2004?,not warzone)

Mine are:

-Payback: more depth of character(s)

-Donnie Darko: original is impossible to understand, the book "philosophy of time travel" helps a lot in the DC

THANK YOU for putting Death Proof. That's all

I didn't even know about a DC for Trek. Sweet.

Troy definitely has a superior Director's Cut.

It's funny, it was only this year that I realized just how much a difference there can be in a Director's Cut of a movie. I thought the theatrical version of Daredevil was pretty bad, but I'll give the Director's Cut a go.

reply

it's definitely far better than the original cut

I can't believe nobody mentioned Bladerunner!

reply

Blade Runner, hands down.

Also Superman II, Donner's Cut

reply

I like most extended versions, but I was disappointed by the Alien 3 assembly cut (too much exposition and I found the live dog alien birth more shocking than from a dead ox) and the lack of "I want more life fah***" in the Blade Runner Final Cut. I'm a little torn between Lester's & Donner's versions of Superman II actually.

I prefer it when they get the final cut right the first time though, can't a producer let the director run his cut by the test audiences first? Well, in the cases where a studio isn't purposefully marketing a double dipping strategy with different versions anyway. Or such as in the case of Daredevil TC vs DC, does the majority really prioritise a dumbed down action quickie where the love scene is obligatory everytime over something that makes sure you care about what happens to each character and the hero has a calling over said love scene?

reply

As for me, I love Superman 2: Donner Cut over the Lester cut.

I think the Lord of the Rings extended editions are superior to the theatrical. One you watch those, you can't go back.

reply

The director's cut of The Butterfly Effect! His version makes more sense.

reply

Donnie Brasco (Not exactly the Director's Cut, but an Extended Cut). The original was superb, and I love it, but, I think that the additional added footage made it even better. It fleshed out other minor parts of the story, and threw in a few more scenes (Some which underlined the relationship between some of the characters) that were also excellent.

reply

I really liked the expanded relationship between Matt and Froggy. Also Matt's detective work and the sub plot of the innocent man accused of a crime.

Hellboy

The Missing-the ending feels more complete specifically

American Gangster- i liked the extra footage

They were gonna make me a major for this, and I wasn't even in their *beep* army anymore.

I would say then that hollywood simply needs to get it's head out of it's ass and let Directors tell the story they want to tell. Clearly most people don't have a problem with long films as long as they are good.

Examples

The DArk Knight

Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Nuff said.

Cool thread by the way. Also the Basic INstinct directors cut was better.

The entire reason is monetary.

Director's Cuts of movies tend to be longer than TC, even though they are the artist's original intent.

A longer movie means less screenings, and potentially less money at the box office.

That's why DC are released on DVD or Blu-Ray.

When a movie first premieres, let's say it's on 3,000 screens across the USA.

How many showings per screen per day? For movie less than 120 minutes (2 hours) long, that's usually about 6 or 7 screenings.

Each theater screen can hold about 500 people (on average), at about $8 per ticket.

So, 3000 screens x 500 people per screen x 6 screenings per day x $8 per ticket average. That comes out to potentially $72 million per day.

If the movie is longer than 2 hours, say 140 minutes or 150 minutes, that's often one less screening per day per screen.

So, 3000 screens x 500 people per screen x 1 less screening per day x $8 per ticket. That comes out to potentially $12 million less per day with a significantly longer director's cut.

Over the course of a month run, a long DC version could make $50 to $80 million less than a shorter TC version at the box office.

Faced with that, movie studios often have the director/editor trim as much as they can to fit a movie to run 110 minutes or less. Then the director/editor is allowed to make the movie as long as they desire for disc release.

For me, the Lord of the Rings extended versions. It simply helps add to the film's attempt at showcasing as much Tolkien lore as possible.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. That's the most stupid Director's Cut ever.

Halloween 07 was a dissapointing film but the directors cut made it a little bit better

Dawn of the dead directors cut made an already fantastic film even better

Blade Runner, hands down.

Honorable mention to Donner's cut of Superman II.
