Mel can do the violent, man of few words role very well imo (Ransom, Braveheart, The Road Warrior)
He's brilliant at picking roles with tight dialogue he can say between clenched teeth or while shouting...he knows his strengths lol

He is getting older now so I don't know how much longer this will work for him

I've always loved Gibson, his foolish public behavior aside

reply

Yes, that's true, he does go for characters who say little but do a lot.

As he gets older I think his best bet will be to try the "Dutch Uncle" type of character, the older mentor who's a guide and example to younger characters. Or the "wise sage" graybeard.

reply

That might work...AND happily his 'people' have reeled his ass in and he's been on good behavior for some time now so there's hope he does a few more films

u guys are joking, or trolling.
Mel Gibson is one of the best, most versatile actors the industry has seen in decades. He can do it all, and do any genre very well: period pieces, western, Shakespeare, comedy. action, romantic, war, etc, etc...

If you want just a taste of Mel's chops....watch the mutiny scene in The Bounty. Or....watch pretty much ANY scene in The Patriot, especially when he loses a child. Try watching The Man Without a Face.....or Gallipoli....or The Year of Living Dangerously, etc, etc....

Mel has a natural charm and screen presence. He can make you laugh...make you cry....break your heart. Not many actors left have that range. He's one of the last true movie stars and versatile talents. Tom Cruise is another. Those 2 actors rarely produce a dud. The vast majority of their films are great--and THEY are great in them.

Watch Braveheart....and tell me Mel is not a great actor.

reply

Not trolling at all

He's great in the roles he chooses...He's best when playing a tightly strung peaceful guy driven to extreme violence

It's called an 'archetype' and he's been giving it the bullseye for decades

Great actor?
No.

Amazing screen charisma and choice of projects..?
YES.

Not joking or trolling, Rip. Expressing a personal opinion, is what it's called.

Your mentioning of Gibson and Tom Cruise as examples of "versatile movie stars" made me smile. But not in a good way. ;)

And I've seen Braveheart... and I reiterate, Mel Gibson is not a great actor, in my opinion.

But, if you like them, fine. :)

reply

Both are great actors.

I said Tom Cruise is another example of a versatile talent and a true movie star. If you haven't seen Born on the 4th of July, his performance in that film will break your heart. I do wish he'd stretch more often, like in that role....or films like A Few Good Men, but IMO he is not only versatile, but a terrific actor. But like you say, to each their own.
