In the scene where Rita breaks down to Sam and then he comforts her.
He also starts kissing her.
We already seen that Rita was attracted to him in the suit.
So, the next scene they are together in, they are acting all sheepish towards each other.
Rita is like "hi...sam"
and Sam is like "hi ...laywer"
Like something went on between them.....

Yes, there's something went on between them which was that their relationship was no longer only between laywer and her client but turning to be a friendship. Remember what Rita said when she brought Willie to Sam's apartment. It's that the relationship change her in the best way than to Sam.
I jumped online after watching this film because I was wondering the same thing.
I would love to know what the filmmakers want us to think.
I am leading toward yes.... those kisses were definitely something - lots on the neck.... yes, Sam is affectionate, but I believe the director would have specified kisses that looked a little more platonic, if they didn't want the viewers to believe something else was happening.

No, they didn't. However! It was originally intended for them to sleep together, and there was a sex scene in the original script. Whether or not they actually filmed it, I don't know. But on the DVD there is an extended version of the scene where they dance together.
My guess is they cut it out because they didn't want people to be disturbed by it. Although, it's kind of obvious it was implied because of how Sam says "You should leave your husband." repeatedly in another scene, and the awkward greeting afterwards.
Well, the film has an open ending about that. You can either think something happened and Rita left her husband so they can be together with Sam. But I personally think the otherwise, I didn't see a love relationship between them. Rita knows there can possibly no way for them to have a relationship and all in Sam's mind is getting his daughter back so there wouldn't really be anything more than friendship.

However, that scene(where he comforts her) is the point in the film where Rita finally sees him as a human being and not as a client or retarded or anything else; a good, kind-hearted friend who only wants her to be happy. It's to show she's finally trying to make a change in her life for the better(as opposed to what she was like when Sam first met her).
After that, she eats slower, reconnects with her son, is apparently in the process of divorcing her husband and is overall a much happier person.
