I think they did! In the scene where Rita breaks down to Sam and then he comforts her. He also starts kissing her. We already seen that Rita was attracted to him in the suit.
So, the next scene they are together in, they are acting all sheepish towards each other. Rita is like "hi...sam" and Sam is like "hi ...laywer"
Well maybe they did just make out ... but I reckon something defiantly happened... Its goes with the feel of the movie too as to showing that Sam was just a normal guy, he has friends, a job, a kid, bills to pay and is capable of having relationships with women.... just my opinion
I didn't take it that way at all. I didn't think there were any signs of anything going on between them but friendship. He gave her kisses the way any 7-year-old would when trying to comfort someone they care about. Granted he has slept with at least one woman before, but I assume she seduced him. I cannot imagine him making a move on her.
The next day they were a little shy, yes, and I assumed it was because of what had happened the previous day. Like an earlier poster said, Rita isn't used to showing her vulnerability like that.
I understand why you ask about something happening between them. I dont think anything did, i just saw it as him trying to console her as he would if his daughter was upset hug and kiss her but the following scene when they meet and she says "hello mister dawson" and he replies "hello lawyer" was a bit odd. It seemed strange like they were uncomfortable for a minute, she barely makes eye contact with him.
I don't think they did. I think she was just embarrased the next day that she'd revealed what's been worrying her, that she's not "perfect" and that she too has problems. That she's vulnerable like everyone else.
I know the worlds a broken bone, but melt your headaches, call it home
are you completely thick??? God, it doesn't take a genious to realise that there was NO sexual attraction between them! It was because rita had revealed a weakness! She constantly tries to put a front on to show how well she's coping, until finally she cracks and shows a vulnerable side to sam. That is why she appeared to feel awkward the next day. It was after that scene that their relationship became deeper because up until then it had been rita helping sam. When infact they both had issues and needed eachothers support. And rita was not attracted to sam in the suit. Incase you hadn't noticed, rita started off completely unsure about how to treat sam or how to talk to him. gradually she got to know him better became more understanding as it got further into the film. she learnt a lot about herself from their relationship. which is why she actually says to sam something like, 'i think i may have got more out of this relationship than you have' or something along those lines. You clearly didn't understand their relationship which was one of the very important messages in the film.
Sam is just a very caring individual (he hugged the woman in Rita's office when she cried, and he didn't even know her!), so when he saw how distressed Rita was, he wanted nothing more than for her to be comforted. However, since they were closer, he kissed her. He wanted her to feel appreciated.
She was awkward afterwards because she, a strong lawyer who seems so impassive about everything, broke down and confessed everything to Sam. She was probably really embarrassed, but realized what a great friend Sam was to her.
I totally agree with the above post. Any lawyer filleting themselves open to a client would most likely be embarrassed afterward, and she was now the weak one being helped by someone strong, when it was just the opposite before she stormed into his apartment.
Actually I think they did. In the original script the next day after Rita's emotional break down, it says Sam: Hi Lawyer Rita: Hello Mr. Dawson Rita: Shall we? Sam: We already did! SHHHH! Don't tell anyone.
I kind of thought that something might've happened too. Obviously that was done on purpose. I dont know if they actually had sex, but I am positive that Rita was having strong feelings for Sam.
I found myself saying "You go boy!" during that scene. I also think those scenes were deliberately ambivalent, yes, as an excuse so the audience can get a laugh and say they slept together. Just what the previous poster said.
ehh IMO i dont think anything happened...i mean do you really think he would make out with her knowing she was married? he had morals. And sex!?!? haha the awkwardness the next day i think was just from the fact that she just let everything she felt out and now sam knew she wasnt so perfect and it with his remark hi lawyer i just think it showed that he never saw her as anything different.
To the person who asked what Rita meant when she said "I've got more out of this relationship than you"-Rita gave Sam her legal services but she felt that Sam gave her so much more in helping her become less guarded, frozen etc which then helped her to get her own life back on track.
It's one of those cases that could go either way but I'm going to come down on the side of if they hadn't already, it was coming soon.
She was obviously surprised by his appearance in the suit and I think a little attracted to him. There was the awkwardness the next day after Rita's revelations and their conversation in the restaurant where he told her she needed to leave her husband, where she mentioned the client lawyer distance that needed to be maintained. It was likely the only thing keeping them out of a very non professional relationship. (Yes, I meant non professional, not unprofessional)

Hello, Mr. Dawson. Yeah. Hello, lawyer. Shall we? And in these next months Mr. Dawson will be expanding his support system to include regional service programs, tutors,...
There is nothing there like Sam: We already did! SHHHH! Don't tell anyone.
I read an interview or discussion or something years ago that said, yes, Sam and Rita did make love. However, the scene was cut because the director didn't believe the audience would be open to this type of situation. Now, this was a LONG time ago and since I cannot reference anything, I have to label it as hearsay. I'm just repeating what I've read but, throw stones if you must.
However, if you watch the scene, it does fade away in an interesting way. Also, IMHO, their banter the next day is very indicitive of two people who now have carnal knowledge of each other. For the first time, Sam mentions to Rita that she needs to leave her husband. He also says something along the lines of, and I am paraphrasing, "When speaking with your attorney, do not be familiar." Like I said, I'm paraphrasing, but this, to me, was a huge indicator of carnal knowledge between Sam and Rita.
Sam wanted to stay with Rita instead of going to watch a video with his friends. From what I understand of those who have mental disabilities or, as I like to say, a different ability or way of viewing and living in the world than I, routine is extremely important. They do not ever like to deviate from their routine so for Sam to change his plans was a subtle yet profound detail.
I haven't ever thought Sam was diagnosed with mental retardation. I have known someone with mental retardation and I have known those with autism/asperger's. IMO, Sam is somewhere on the autistic spectrum. For example, he knows EVERYTHING about the Beatles. Some with autism, from what I have researched, find out everything when it comes to something they like or are interested in. Again, routine. Sam has a daily routine and it causes him a bit of stress to deviate from his routine; ie, the restaurant scene.
He doesn't have sound sensitivity but the movie isn't focused on Sam's condition, it is focused on the relationship between he and his daughter. Also, he doesn't seem to mind being touched or hugged or giving a hug. But, as I've learned, those with autism aren't all the same. There is a HUGE spectrum to consider. One may think in pictures, while another may be more mathmatically inclined.
If an autistic child's skills/abilities/talents aren't pushed correctly and at an early age, then he/she might seem to have more of a disability than an ability. Yet beneath the surface, there could be a brilliant mind sleeping, awaiting to be tapped into.
Again, some may not ever be able to do much in terms of job skills, education, etc. It all depends on where they are on the spectrum.
I didn't mean to write this long of a reply. I apologize. I tend to do this a lot.
I would like to offer one more thing and then I'll hush up. If you are interested in learning about the possibilities of how AMAZING someone's life can turn out to be, even though they have autism, I HIGHLY suggest you rent 'Temple Grandin' or watch it on HBO. This is the absolute best biopic I've ever seen.
In my mind, and how the scene went, it just showed sam was a very beautiful and affectionate person, and was holding her and comforting her. What is a couple of kisses?? Kisses are to console people too, they dont always mean that its sexual.
What is wrong with a couple of kisses ...? Nothing, if two people are equals, but in the case a lawyer/client relationship it is immoral ... and in real life, the lawyer could get disbarred if caught. That is what kills me about TV shows and movies, any sort of professional relationship is considered a possibility for romance. Doctors and patients, teachers and students, lawyers and clients, etc. It perpetuates the misguided belief that such behavior is acceptable.
