Why did they dress the kids so hideously?

I was sixteen when this show first aired, so I was out of the target demographic, but I still watched it regularly with my younger sister and enjoyed it a lot. One thing that always stuck out for me was that the way Lizzie and Miranda dressed was so gaudy and tacky, even for seventh graders. And the supposedly popular Kate was no better. My sister, who was actually in middle school at the time, used to comment on how the episodes with clothes as the subject didn't make any sense because everything everyone wore looked awful and would get you teased in real life.

I still watch Disney pretty often and one thing that strikes me about all the current shows is how fashionable the casts are. Wizards of Waverly Place, Sonny With A Chance, and Jonas all have characters that dress in ways I can see real tweens admiring and wanting to emulate.

I know it's a shallow topic, but for a show that dedicated an entire episode to the perfect pair of jeans, it did seem a little ironic how truly awful and uncool the clothes on Lizzie McGuire were. Anyone agree?

I don't really understand it myself. The clothes are all so bad. I just don't understand what real people were wearing that stuff. I dunno I mean I was like 10 when this show started and I don't recall any people wearing anything resembling that kind of stuff when I was a kid. Then again the world is different from tv they were obviously trying to be trendy and they took it to the extreme. I wonder if people truly tried to emulate Lizzie? I guess I am glad its like that because it reminds me of the times...kinda-ish.

lol I thought they're outfits were cute.

I agree. Those clothes were so horrible. Even during the time I was watching the show, I thought the clothes looked awful.

As I remember it (and I was in the 9-11 age range during the show's run), what the characters wore reflected what kids wore at that time. I think Miranda may have dressed a little "out there," but I wouldn't call it hideous.

Looking back on it, they dressed super tacky. Part of me has to ask myself "did we really dress like that as kids?". Granted I was 8 or 9 when this aired and I always assumed they were 12-13. But still. Disney was really really weird back then.

I remember loving the clothes they wore when I watched this show. Looking back on that time now, I can see how they look kind of bad but I still liked it then.

In Clarissa explains is all, the main character had even more "over the top" out fits.
