Kevin Spacey ruined this movie for me. For some reason he decided to make sure to look very smug and pretentious, rather than work on being "believable". Even in his catatonic condition he still looked very smug and pretentious, like trying hard to supress a smile! He didn't understand a catatonic person is supposed to be completely void of expression.

Spacey, as someone else mentions, was flawless. There could be no other Prot in my eyes.
He's supposed to look that way, and if you don't get the fact that the close up shot of him surpressing a smile at the end is indicative of something then you have no idea what you're talking about.
I guess my opinion is simply different from the OP's, but I thought Spacey was great in this movie. I liked the way he balanced, quirkiness, intelligence and kindness. He might've been the most likeable movie alien since "Starman" or "E.T." . Very endearing.
(I'm not about to start naming every likeable alien character in between )
I cant think of anyone better for the role, he was flawless.
