After having watched this movie many many times I have come to a conclussion that the two rhynos, Carl and Frank are GAY (as in homosexual). Oh and one more observation, Carl is a black dude and Frank's white. Look at how their "faces" are drawn. Anybody gonna back me up ? :)
Yes, they were gay. Perhaps this wasn't blatently spelled out for the viewer, but it was obvious to anyone who is familiar with the lifestyle. As for their faces, this would make sense considering the actors themselves are black (Cedric) and white (Stephen Root,) respectively.
I believe the characters were drawn in 2000-2001, and the voice acting recorded in 2001. I don't think it was intentional for the characters to look black or white like their voice actors.
That would be odd as the voice recording is usually done before the animation - the animation fits the speech not the other way around. The character's features are often based on the voice actor who plays them
Characters are designed by several people and often the ones picked are the ones that suit the personality of the character the most. The audience often times relates the characters to that voice and then in turn to that celebrity. Rarely is a character entirely based off the person doing it, though I think we have some exceptions. When Toy Story was made, they actually designed Woody and Buzz before Tom Hanks and Tim Allen decided to do it, and the makers of the film were amazed at how coincidentally the characters had qualities that refelected the faces of there respective actors.
I TOTALLY agree with gundainium. This is a RIDICULOUS claim. How can you possibly know that they're gay, especially "literally"? I didn't notice one LITERAL implication of it in the least. Honestly, the public these days reduces everything to sex and everyone to objects. Every post that agreed with this ludicrious idea simply said, "Totally, for sure, they are SO gay," rather than saying why on earth they would think something so absurd. There's no proof, no line, no ANYTHING that implies this. You are reading WAY too much into this. People these days are always trying to twist innocent things (especially aimed at children) to mean something totally different.
I guess guys can't even be friends anymore unless they're attracted to each other. Let's all grow up...
No, I'm not a homophobe, as was made evident from my previous post: "Am I a 'homophobe'? No." I now realize what you meant in YOUR previous post. Not to be rude, but "psihological"? Just because something is well known and generally accepted doesn't mean it's true. But thanks (I guess) for clearing it up. Yes, there are those who would (and do) make everything about gender and sex (even cartoons...) and I appreciate that your post doesn't attack anyone or their beliefs. After all, this is a free country...
But, I WAS thinking logically. As my post seemed to reflect a disapproval of the previous posters' views on this film, it seemed your reply was to mine. Logical, I think so. In any case, I'm sure we can all just get along and appreciate Ice Age for what it is: A family comedy, fun for what it is.
When I saw the movie (for the first time today), I thought it was immediately clear that the rhinos WERE gay. I thought it was pretty cool for the scriptwriters to do it. And when I came to this discussion today I thought the person who started this thread was a moron for thinking it was some big secret thing or "hey, look what I discovered!" For me it wasn't really a light bulb going off over my head. It was just the way it was done, and that's that.
I watched the film all of an hour ago and agree wholeheartedly that the two rhinos act very gay. Hell, one of them even talks in a stereotypcal gay voice.
I saw this movie for the first time yesterday and enjoyed it a lot.
However, on the topic of this thread it never occurred to me that they were supposed to be gay (although it may have been intended by the makers).
I hasten to add, before anyone makes the startling leap of logic that has been made above - that somehow this makes me homophobic - I'd like to make it clear that it wouldn't bother me in the least if it was hinted that they were gay.
I just didn't notice it, that's all.
I haven't returned the movie to the rental store yet, so if I have time I might check out the "rhino scenes" again to see if there's anything I missed...
By the way, a "stereotypical gay voice" is exactly that - stereotypical. Many gay men speak just like any straight man, and some straight men speak effeminately. In a cartoon it's not unusual to use exagerrated voices and speech styles, so I don't think this proves anything.
Of course, you could be right that the makers intended to suggest they were gay, but as I said I'll have to check it out again.

You are so right. I agree with every word you said.

Yep, that's what I thought. And while I agree that only some gay men act in the stereotypical way that many people use as their touchstone for "gay" behavior, it's also true that if it walks like a duck and sounds like a duck, then it's probably a gay rhino. If not, they're definitely "meterosexual" (explains the mud bath).
Why are people reading so much into a frickin' kids movie? This is just a cartoon. They're CGI animals for God's sake! If the writers intended them to be gay, that's fine. It took a lot of guts to do it. More power to them. But if the characters aren't gay, then maybe people with nothing better to do are reading too much into it. I personally don't care if the rhinos are gay or not. I don't understand why someone would watch a cartoon and sit there trying to interpret each character's sexuality. A bit ridiculous.
There's not much "reading into it" involved. It was my first impression. When I first saw the movie and saw the rhinos, that was the first thing I thought because of their voices, which is always the way gay people are represented in the media, although it is true that not all gay people talk like that and not all people that talk like that are gay (think of Jack and Will from Will and Grace).
Also, just because someone says that someone or something is gay (as in homosexual) does not mean that person is a homophobe. It just means that they got the impression that the character or person or whatever is gay.
Even if they are gay, (I'm not saying they are!) maybe it was due to circumstance. I don't see a female Rhino in the film. Maybe they were just horny? Sorry but no one had done that obvious joke and I felt it had to be done. I will admit though, that for some reason I did come away from the film that they were a couple but I don't know why. Anyway it's not something I really thought about I just enjoyed the film as light entertainment and not a dark gritty film about Rhino love!
This topic was just too hard to pass up. Alright, first of all, I would have no problem with putting homosexual characters into an animated film, aside from all the stirring from conservative censors that would happen (right now, you can't even say something bad about the President in a movie without it getting yanked... but that's a different post...), so to the poster that asked if it would be a positive message for "children or adults" to see that sort of thing onscreen, yes, i think it would. The homosexual community will be here whether we heterosexuals make them feel bad or not, so we might as well deal with it. Also, if you're still of the mindset that seeing homosexuals leads to someone being a homosexual, you're about a century of psychology behind. Frued would be proud. And as to the first poster who had an "aha" moment about the rhinos, maybe you were reading a little too much into things. The guys were trying to eat, and rhinos are vegetarians. I didn't hear a lisp when either one spoke. And yes, they were in the mud bath, waiting for the sloth, whom they had a grudge with. Now the sloth... he had a lisp... he was in a mud bath... he was also pretty effeminate... but he flirted with women. Perhaps he was trying to supress his deeply rooted homosexual urges by overcompensating with females, whom he's not actually sexually attracted to at all. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it. I don't mean to come off too harsh to the first poster (to the person that asked about whether it was appropriate or not, I meant to come off harsh) but I don't think reading this much into things is doing anyone a favor- it's playing into stereotypes and, as was mentioned before, makes it impossible for two guys to have a salad together without rumors getting started.
Goodevening: I was just thinking about metrosexual/sexuality or however I should put it.. hm. Anyway, I didn't notice the gay vibes, so I don't really know.. but if they were gay/metrosexuals, then its okay with me.. infact, I think its kinda cool.
Like other people have said, I didn't think it was a big secret they were gay. That was just the impression I got. Obviously I'm not alone so there has to be something to it.
Unless I heard wrong, they were Frank and Carl, not Frank and Carol like someone else mentioned. Don't think those are short for girl's names.
"Carl, he RUINED, our salaaaddd" - In a very stereotypically gay voice, as if they were out dining together. Not sure who said it though, so it may be Frank in there.
Also, they are in the hot tub later together, which doesn't automatically make them gay, but considering how gay I thought they were up until that point, that was my take on the scene.

Yes, but having a lisp has nothing to do with someone's sexuality. I actually thought it was just a speech impairment, it's not something I would associate with being gay.
