Big Flaw

Ok so I know this is animation (cartoon) and as such disbelief should be suspended - but suspended how far?

Scientifically this film is ludicrous, mixing two distinctly different geological time zones and creatures into one all encompasing umbrella labelled "Ice Age"

The Ice Age as most scientist define it is a period known as the Pleistocene - the last 2 million years of history up to 10,000 years ago when it changed to the Holocene.

Smilodon (Sabre Tooth Tigers) were primarilly Mesozoic creatures that became extinct along with the rest of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous.

Woolly mammoth - Mammuthus primigenius (Blumenbach, 1799), were primarilly Pleistocene creatures. And yes they were around at the same time as humans.

Yada yada - can't have an extinct creature roaming around in a later time frame.

And as for sloths being around where there was permafrost - again dubious.

okay, so all this conversation about these animals in the wrong time period and blah blah blah. did ANYone notice the fact that they're all bloody talking??? why don't you address that?

It's amazing how the 'net can lure you around. I was looking up facts about the giant short-faced bear and remembered Ice Age. Then I found this thread: a debate over pointing out the flaws in a CG animation. We might as well complain that Ed, Edd, and Eddy could teach children how to be unsuccessful in marketing. Just because we want to dismiss it as 'only a cartoon' doesn't mean we're ignorant or brainwashed by the media. It's sad to think someone had a deepfelt opinion that they had to express the flaws in a cartoon. Look! Jimmy Neutron is walking on a meteor without a spacesuit! You people claim you're geologists and whatnot, but this...is silly.
This information given would have been accepted more if you guys were visitors in a 3rd grade class. Other than that, I think the "public" can live without knowing some prehistoric animals in a movie (now 2 years old) did not exist together.

you people all think to much, it's a cool movie,. i liked it, if you didn't like it and if you wanna go and overanalyze it...KEEP IT TO YOURSELF!!! all your trying to do is sound all smart and shyt but maybe you are, but it's a little kid's movie and if you have toi waste your smarts on that then you need a hobby jeezlauis

You know, you have a point.

But did you notice in "Toy Story" that the toys seemed to move and talk? What was that all about? How ridiculous!

reply

Aside from the scientific errors which the producers ignored purposely of course, I personally thought the ending where it went 20000 years in the future was unnecessary. It was supposed to be funny, but I didn't realize that until I browsed a few posts. I didn't really see the humor in that part, but that's just my opinion.

I'm pretty sure that smilodons weren't alive the same time as the dinosaurs. When you say that it goes against every single dino-ice age book that i've read, and i've read a lot. I don't think you know what you're talking about.

The flaws listed above are eclipsed by the merits of this charming film. Funny and poignant, Ice Age entertains on different levels but also contains (subtle) serious threads for others who care to look.

Did anyone notice the apocryphal undertone? All the creatures featured in the film: Sloth, Mammoth, Neanderthal man, Saber tooth Tiger, Rhinoceri, Dodo Birds (even the creatures who make small cameo appearances in the migrating herds) are ALL extinct.

I like it. Keep going with it! This is stuff I've never previously learned about!

I noticed another big flaw, all of the animals spoke english. Now it impossible for animals to speak english, after all they are animals and animals can't speak english. This is a horrible movie because it has animals that speak english to eachother.

"I'm gonna put my 2 cents in as well. I am a psychology major and I think that if someone wishes to analyze a movie's content go for it!! On the other hand, if you wish to watch it simply or it's entertainment value, I think you should control yourselves from needless critisism. Some people actually enjoy analyzing movies! I am not in any way trying to attack anybody but it seems to me that some people are missing the point: Yes it is a cartoon where reality can be suspended for a while, Yes it is supposed to be entertainment for young children, and Yes it can be analyzed. BTW, undergroundwoman,I think you are a very intelligent person, thank you for your input, it was very interesting to read."

I totally agree with this post and that is why I am posting it again.

Some teenagers noticed the flaws in the movie, like me!!! Watch Core...scientifically way off! It is very educational for kids to correct movies, I find it very entertaining.

PS the idea that animals don't talk has already been addressed at least 10 times.
