To a certain extent. I believe his unfortunate childhood shaped him to be obsessive about a perfect family life. He was probably moved into child protective services, and placed in one abusive household to another. You can't help but feel some sort of empathy for that person. He was a lost soul, so to speak. However, the stalker/vigilante acts he committed merited a great deal of concern.

I bet he was never removed from the home. The story seems to indicate that no one ever knew the abuse he suffered, and he never told anyone at all.
Hence the violent 'confession' at the end, he seems relieved after verbally venting to the detective. He finally let it out.

I felt very bad for him. There was no justification for his actions; however, I felt very sorry for him. He needed psychiatric help more than prison time.

reply

Felt sorry for him, for the upbringing and lifestyle he had. But it still didn't give him the right to go around stalking people.

I don't think I would want to know anybody who couldn't feel any sympathy for Sy.

Yes of course. It helped a lot with Robin Williams playing the role.Anyone else and it might not have worked as well.

Sy had his innocence taken away early and was violated to the extreme. Who knows what truly happened there. Did he stay there and was he forced into that crap until he was too old; or was his folks caught and he bounced around until he was old enough? We won't ever know but either way he had rough as hell.

One thing's for sure: this all shows how you don't handle a victim of abuse. He deserved a good home with loving parents and mental help from the start to counter his problems from all that abuse. He may have even gotten over his phobias by adulthood if it was done right; but I'm sure back in his youth that was a pipe dream. No one cared back then like they do now. Things like that where taboo and not socially discussed. He was just a misfit thrown in a home if that happened.

He still probably could have gotten therapy when he was older and like someone said he could have volunteered to help kids or something. The deal was he didn't try like he should have but he was scared I guess.

I don't agree with his actions at all but he was doing what he thought was needed and right. I understand that fantasizing because we all do it but he times-ed it by 10. When he felt he had to punish the dad he resorted to what his dad and possibly mom did to him with the pictures. That was the point of no return. He was done after that because he resorted to his demonic times to punish them. He became his father (albeit in a less taboo way but still as bad.)

He was probably destined for a mental ward after that which could have been avoided if the law and health officials did their job in his youth.

Absolutely yes because he was lonely, got treated like a lesser person, had to work for a manager who wasn't very nice to him

reply

No sympathy. Boo hoo, his childhood sucked and he was lonely. That is no excuse for terrorizing people and all the other crap he did. If he did any of that shit to my wife I'd take him out permanently, and sleep well that night.
