Yeah, that's true. It's one of the reasons they eventually become close friends. Near the end, Carl talks about his 4-year-old daughter who is really 15. He says, "Sure you [understand]. Sometimes, it's easier living the lie."
They both were unhappy with their lives and their families; they both had a similar sense of loneliness.
It's also, likely, the reason that Carl vouched for Frank instead of letting Frank sit in jail. He seemed to understand why Frank did all that he did ("living the lie")
