Why is this considered a "screwjob" outside of kayfabe?

If Vince is the owner and chairman of WWF, wouldn't he have the right to decide and book his product however he wants? If he wanted the outcome of the match changed isn't it completely within his right to do so? How was he stepping out of his boundaries or "screwing" Bret by changing the outcome of a product he has full legal control of?

Because he didn’t put his foot down and say I’m the boss, this is how it is. He agreed with Bret’s original plan, then got everyone together except Bret, and came up with an alternate plan.

If they didn’t do anything wrong, why was everyone running scared from Bret after the match, and why did everyone deny involvement until years later? Everyone involved knew what they did was unethical.

They like to pretend the events that led to them beating WCW was totally organic and not at all planned so it looks better for Documentaries and such.
