What was so wrong with Penelope Cruz's performance? Why a Razzie?!

I've watched the film twice in its entirety now, and both times I'm baffled as to why Cruz's performance received a Razzie nomination. Diaz and Cruise may have been the obvious standouts, but that's probably because they had the most dramatic material. Cruz's Sofia was an understated character...somewhat passive and maybe withdrawn. But this doesn't mean she wasn't complex. I believe Cruz nailed it in subtle facial nuances and exchanged glances between Cruise and herself. So, why the Razzie? Was it merely a result of there not being enough "mainstream" pictures with crappy performances that year?

Who takes Razzies seriously?

Cruz was adorable in Vanilla Sky. I completely bought her being someone so special that David would want to change his life for. Easy to see why Tom was smitten in real life too.

Obviously not literally, but I can see how the shape of her nose might make people go to that insult. Regardless, she was super fucking hot in her prime

The Razzie nomination is for the entire body of work in a particular year, not necessarily for a particular movie.

In 2002 Cruz was nominated for a Razzie based on her work in Blow, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, and Vanilla Sky.

I highly doubt it was as a result of her work specifically in Vanilla Sky.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

Lol haven’t seen Mandolin, but she most likely got it for Blow as the complaining, coke-sniffing cartel housewife from hell. To be honest she does a pretty good job at it as a lot of Spanish (not Latina) women are actually just as crazy and irritating like that. I just interpreted it as her playing herself at her worst.

I came to make a thread about this after reading the wiki article for this movie. I can't believe she was nominated for a Razzie, she was natural! Fantastic chemestry with TC.

I didn’t know she was nominated for a razzie for this, one of my favourite films, I thought her performance was fine for the character and some of the best moments of the film have her at it’s centre.
