Candice Bergen was such a bitch for telling Reese Witherspoon's mother to go back to her double wide and fry something and she deserved to get punched in the jaw by Reese Witherspoon for it.

After Melanie lied about who she was and goes back to her husband she just is the only character not blindly following it and that makes her a villain in this stupid film. Reese Witherspoon could have told her she was wrong but then she'd just be a hypocrite since she was ashamed of her background as well.

OK, Maybe Reese Witherspoon was wrong to lie about her family and history and string a guy along and dump him at the altar without talking about how she felt before everybody spent all that money and traveled all that way, but it doesn't justify what Candice Bergen said to Reese Witherspoon's mother. And besides, how would you feel if someone told your mother to go back to her double wide and fry something? shareMaybe the movie clearly hates all of it's characters equally and I don't know why focus on that line but I also have to say that Reese Witherspoon was lucky Candice Bergen didn't press charges when she punched her in the jaw for what she said to her mother and I know that Candice Bergen was kind of irked about Reese Witherspoon lying about her whole identity and leaving Patrick Dempsey at the altar and everyone around her supporting that but that was no reason for her to take it out on Reese Witherspoon's mother.

In the real world you don't just dismiss wasting everyone's money and time for a wedding and leaving your son at the altar which was what Pearl was doing with a smile on her face. Again, Pearl is as badly written as any of the characters here. She spends half the movie resenting Melanie for going off to New York and then the other half saying how she didn't want Melanie to have her small town life. Which is it?
