Was Anyone From Alabama Offended by this Movie???

Come on guys.. we have got to stand up for ourselves.. this movie is an insult to the people of Alabama.. Although I don't deny we do have the "redneck,,white trash, beat up truck driving, beer drinking, baby making "billy bob".. but it definately does not represent the MAJORITY of Alabama. We are very classy, & well educated; and we have not JUST recently discovered recliners! If you do not live in or have never visited our beautiful State .. Please do not judge Alabama by this movie. Granted the hospitality & manners were right on!

I have an aunt who is 58 years old and has lived in New York for 40 years ^^^ she recently moved to Alabama because when she visited every Thanksgiving/Christmas she fell in love with the people and State as a whole. Although she does make fun of our southern accent a little.. I tell her as Jake told Melanie . just because we talk slow doesn't mean we're dumb! ;-)

I''m not from Alabama but from Georgia but all in all this movie shows that this movie does not insult Alabama but it gives it praise.

Growing up in a small little town in Alabama, I don't feel that the movie was offensive at all. I loved it because 5 years ago I came to chicago and had to live there, well chicago isn't bad, but I love alabama it is such a home like atmosphere. In my small town I know that all the people there loved the movie too. Come on guys whats wrong with trailer homes, just casue they can move doesn't mean that they are trashy.... and coon dogs there are nothing wrong with coon dogs they are very loving.... and there is nothing wrong with anything in that movie, there is nothing wrong with a simple life... it beats having to work 50 hours a week just to afford a small one bedroom apartment. The movie made me very home sick and I actually have plans to move back. And one more thing too, if Alabama was so bad why do you think that all these tourists go there. Also the people there are amazing they will welcome most people with a smile and a friendship. So I don't know what all of yall are talking about this being offensive.

I'm not from Alabama, but I have been there. I'm from a very small town in VA called Goochland. You go up to anyone within a 30 mi. radius of us and you say"How do you get to Goochland?" They Won't have a clue. I like he small town mentality and yes, we do have a few hicks, but small towns are great.

I know where Goochland is! I'm in Colonial Heights, myself... 20 miles South of Richmond.

My hubby is from Alabama and his whole family LOVED this film.

I hear you there. I grew up in northern Michigan, and we get the same kinds of questions about indoor plumbing and electricity, among others. I appreciate the people and customs of the many different regions of our country and their colorful qualities, but the stereotypes are a bit too much!

well i would like to say i'm from alabama and i love this movie..i have it and i watch all the time..i thought it was hilarious..but ya'll shouldn't think we are like the people in that movie..cause we dont reinact the civil war..sorry!

aej2000. How do you get questions like that? Um, I live in Michigan and have been up in the North part, and they have those things. So my question is, how do you get those questions. Most people know that Michigan isn't poor, and that most of us Michiganians have indoor plumbing and electricity.
Even in books, the South is portrayed as most of it is.
I read a book a few months ago, and there were these kids that lived in the hills of South Carolina, and they were poor, they had no electricity, and had only $54, and they had to pick flowers and weeds, to get money. But I understand that that is not they way that most people in the South live, but there are alot of people that are like that. So it shouldn't offend you because that is the way that alot of people live. But I do understand what you mean by that.

I want my turkey and frosted flakes..... how bout you.......

reply

I still live up in Northern Mich., and yes, we do have those things.

I was just referring to the ignorance of many people who assume that rural areas don't have the same basic services as in cities.

However, there are an awful lot of deer camps without either..........:-)

People do tend to have misconceptions about the South and can sometimes say or imply things that really piss me off. I was born in Louisiana, so I'm a southern baby, born and bred, but I live in Illinois now. Sometimes people ask me stupid questions, sometimes they're just jerks, but what can you do? Especially when I have relatives in the south who have just as my misconceptions and predujices about the North as the North does about them. It's all ridiculous, if you ask me.

But that's not the point.

I really don't think anyone was trying to imply that Alabama is like the way it was in Sweet Home Alabam. I bet the original idea for this screen play was basically southern girl turned yankee returns home to get a divorce, etc, etc, and they chose Alabama because of the song. It's a cute idea, that's all.

My entire family is from Alabama - and I was not the least insulted. I, in fact, found the characters accepting of folks of all types, races, backgounds, regional origins.....you get the picture. I fell out laughing when Melanie tried to talk to her mother on the phone. I have NEVER had a conversation with my mother or sister that they weren't both talking to whomever was there - the kids, the dogs, the visiting neighbors...I just accept it as an "Alabama thing". They're still great folks.

Uhh... it was just a movie... I'm not from Alabama as you can tell by my name but still..

reply

i'm from Mississippi so i'm close enough;) but at least they let us have teeth and a/c......normally the south is protrayed as greased-haired, toothless, white trash, trailor park hicks

reply

I wasn't offended.

However, the entire movie was incorrect in portraying how people live down here. Who gets that excited about a recliner?

I lived in Huntsville, which is a beautiful city. Anyone else from Huntsville?
