Underrated?
I personally really liked this film for all of its humor and movie references. I really think it should it should be rated higher. Anyone else think so?

shareI thought so. I thought it was amazing, especially for movie buffs. Incredibly produced on every aesthetic level and beautifully shot and directed. However, Paul's story, emotionally anyways, gets lost. There's no catharsis for the audience. I think that keeps it from being a GREAT movie. It's too bad, because he had an amazing actor in Jeremy Davies who really could've delivered.
shareI totally agree about Paul's story getting lost. Jeremy Davies did a fine job for what he had to work with here, but he didn't have enough to work with.
I enjoyed and appreciated the "Dragonfly" backstory, but this film went overboard with the esthetics and atmosphere at the expense of the central storyline. 6/10 for me, but if it had explored Davies' character further, it would have been much higher.
I love this film. It's not "serious" enough to warrant a 10, so I gave it a 9.
OK, really I scored it that high because of the insanely brilliant "Dragonfly" clips. How much better could it be? The rest of the story was entertaining but nothing special.
I almost dropped my rating to "8" because Jason Shwartzman is in it, (can't stand the guy) but his part is small, so....
bought it (late, I know!), watched it, loved it. And the extras on the double side dvd are fantastic!! Many documentaries, interviews, commentaries on films and filmaking! A must have.
shareThere's a core group of people who really love this film. I grew up in the Sixties and the CQ film script reminds me quite a bit of another cult movie Modesty Blaise (1966)with Monica Vitti and Terrence Stamp. I loved the soundtrack by the electronica band, Mellow and even purchased it on CD and it I play it more than just about any soundtrack music in my collection, except maybe some soundtracks by Yann Tiersen and Enno Morricone.
About director and screenwriter Roman Coppola: He really hasn't had any big successes as a director, but he's written a couple of great scripts for Wes Anderson (Moonrise Kingdom & Dargjeeling Limited0. In some ways CQ has the same whimsical feel as the Wes Anderson movies he wrote. I have noticed that Roman has multiple credits as a second unit director for both Wes Anderson & his sister Sofia Coppola. Roman is still relatively young and I hope he gets another opportunity to write and direct another feature length film.
