Matthew McConaughey is utterly over the top and hilarious in this film

I remember seeing this in theaters when it first came out. I was about 11 years old. My friend and I could not stop laughing uncontrollably throughout the entire film because of his outlandish accent ands over the top machismo. Even his posture. Just hilarious.

That was in line with his character. He was intentionally trying to project badass alpha to instill a sense of confidence. He was even taking shots from a flask that was actually water.
