People are people. Put any uniform of power on them and any person with weak morals is capable of bad things, especially if they are deemed acceptable by their society. There are plenty of bullies and sadists in every nation on earth. Just look at the news. It's no different than the cops shooting black kids because they secretly hate them or Isis supporters killing non-Muslims in grotesque ways. And it's not new. The ancient Romans commited horrible atrocities to break the spirits of people they conquered... as did many other armies.

The average German citizen knew all too well what was happening to the Jews and others. How could they not? They lived within miles of the camps and the ones with ovens. The stench of burning human flesh could not be mistaken--the ashes were all over everything. American and Allied forces were in shock when they liberated several camps. They dragged the townspeople into the camp and made them look at what their "leaders" did in their name. Rightfully, the Allied forces knew that the average German knew what was going on in those camps. They were probably scared out of their minds. But, that's no excuse. Many people put their lives on the line to help the Jews and others who were the target of the nazis.

My father was the second GI to enter one of the camps and described the horrors he saw. On the other hand, he also entered the home of a Jewish woman whose son was an SS officer. There was a padlocked room in her house filled with booty. The neighbors knew all about it were were terrified of her son. Over 100,000 Jews or partial Jews served in Hitler's armed forces. Others served as kapos in the death camps, helping the killers for special privileges. Like I said, people are people and there are plenty around who will succumb to evil if it's easier or beneficial in the short term.

And some people are more evil than others. I would imagine any allied soldiers to enter any of those camps would come away with nightmares. My dad served in the artillery branch of the Army. He was in England, Germany, France, Italy, and Japan. He never saw the camps. If he did, I'm sure he would have suffered nightmares the rest of his life. It is well-documented that Hitler had a number of Jews serving in his military. It is also true that many Jews served in the camps helping the nazis to murder their own people. I don't agree that there were over 100,000 Jews serving in Hitler's military. And, I did check out your link and it has no more credibility than many personal/political websites. A lot of histrionics, imo. In addition, many Jews, especially those in Finland, fought on Germany's side because they did not want the Soviet Union to take over their country. Communism was a real threat to many European countries.

Yes, people are people. Many of us do things against our consciences due to many circumstances. As I said, some people are more evil than other people.
