The Best Baseball Movie...EVER

out of some other baseball movies (bull durham, field of dreams, for the love of the game, the rookie, etc) i think the is the best there is. it does so well recreating what they went through and maris and mantle look so much like them. i just think its so powerful and does so well. anyone else agree?

I'm so glad to see how many people liked this movie. It will be timeless! pb

This is an incredible film, but I'm also casting another vote for "Long Gone" - a total classic as well.

Don't know if you're still out there, OP, but you are so right.

It's also true that the other movies had baseball as a tangential subject or as a background, or a canvas for the real themes of the film. But in 61, it really is about baseball first. It's just unbelievable what Crystal was able to do. I think I actually drew a big breath when I first saw Thomas Jane on the film as Mantle (I'd already seen posters of Barry Pepper -- who has quietly compiled a really amazing resume as an actor -- as Maris). The players can play, virtually nothing looks even a little bit fake...it's unprecedented among sports movies, IMHO.

I rank it a very close #3 after "Eight Men Out" and "The Natural".

Originality needs a reboot.

I have to agree. This might be my favorite of all-time and I'm not even a Yankee fan.
