I think it's true the movie was about his being a straight male (presumably, since he is so young) interested in something that is mostly performed by females (although, there are, now adays, many straight male ballet dancers). Undoubtly Michael is gay (does that even need to be said?) I felt bad a lot of the time about how Billy treated Michael's affections towards him. In real life, it would make a "straight" male uncomfortable in most cases. But I thought it was sweet, and that he shouldn't have punched him. Either way, it was kinda sweet how he came onto him LOL. I wasn't sure what they were going to do when they went in that gym that night... (gets his mind out of the gutter....)
shareIt was also said in one post that his rolling around in the grass with his dad had "pederast overtones". I disagree. First off, it's normal for boys to play and "rough house" - even with their dads. I think that, and the fact Billy comes off as such a brawler/roughian (even in his own way) shows his straight-maleness is not in question.
sharesuddenly i'm flying, flying like a bird electricy, electricy needs to strike you.... bored with these is ..... gay!
No bily aint gay, his friend is, but not billy, it's made perfectly clear, unless you watched a different production!
"...the blonde and the pig in knickers"
Just a quick comment on the punch. At that age, with a working class back ground most boys, and that time period are (were) extremely outwardly homophobic. I have several friends who came out of the closet later in life, that used anti gay slang and slurs that they regret now, but was an attempt at fitting in then. There are not many true young non conformists in the world. So I don't think the punch is a clue one way or another. One of my favorite things about the movie is the ambiguity presented, things could be argued well both ways for years one this subject, and might keep the movie current for a long time
shareI think it is the stupidest and most irrelevant question I have ever heard... or read.
First of all it is soooooo clear in the movie. And then... eum... would it really matter?

Your reply:
Is it so clear in the movie? Well, it's not to me and it doesn't seem to be to others, which would suggest a certain welcome ambiguity.
And would it really matter? It doesn't to me because I don't see every film I watch through a gay vs straight filter. I think it does matter to some people and, depending on which way they swing, they will impose their own interpretation on the film, no matter what.
I don't think he is, I think the kiss with michal at the end is just a sign of acceptance which is a major theme in this movie. But i also don't think it's relevant, it's a powerful film either way

I think that one's definitely a case of "bring your own subtext".
shareI don't really think Michael is transgendered. Some people like crossdressing without being transgendered.
It's funny, I just saw the musical and I got the impression Billy was gay--whereas when I saw the movie I thought he was straight. Debbie is only in a few scenes in the musical, and the last scene of the musical is Billy kissing Michael before he leaves so it makes it seem really important. I kind of like him being gay better, but of course it doesn't matter that much.

I don't know about that...I mean, if Michael is going to be a transwoman, Billy doesn't know that yet. If Billy was attracted to Michael it would seem to Billy like a homosexual attraction.
I haven't seen the movie in a long time but I didn't get the impression Michael was trans. Besides, at the end Michael as an adult looks more like a drag queen or just a gay guy having fun then someone actually trying to present as female.
Uh, I don't think Michael was transgendered. I think he was just joking around with the crossdressing, like maybe he was curious. He was still a boy. He looked like a boy and acted like a boy, and I'm pretty sure Billy saw him as one. He just liked some girly things. Notince how Michael never expresses any desire to be a girl; he says his dad does it sometimes when people are not around, so he was probably just curious. He admits he's a "poof", meaning he's gay.
Anyway, I don't think Billy was gay. He kissed Michael because he loved him as a friend, and he knew that Michael loved him as more.
You can't trade magic like *beep* Pokemon cards! - RIP Jesus :(
Well he does punch out that annoying little kid that was trying to make a move on him after the audition. And I'm pretty sure that he calls him a bent bastard as well. Then there's the scene with Debbie...but they also don't go further. I don't think he is gay, but at that young age I don't think he was even thinking about his sexuality...and he was way focused on the ballet. Who knows what might have happened to him in between his acceptance into the ballet school and the epilogue.
shareMy God, isn't it obvious? The movie went to great lengths to demonstrate that he wasn't gay. And who cares anyway? I'm so sick of all the focus of homosexuality
as much as I friggin' hate gay-bashers, macho thugs, and bullies. If someone's nuts enough to be gay, let them do it without my having to know about it. Proselytizers of anything whatsoever are imbeciles. I don't know what could possibly make my enjoyment of this terrific movie better or worse by knowing if the boy was a fag or not. In all honesty, I'd rather the question never came up. If those macho friends of Billy's father could drop it, anybody can. I thought the scene where the little girl told that Billy's Dad secretly dressed up in his dead wife's clothes was particularly corageous and put the question of who's gay and who's not to rest. Anyone who thinks his dad was gay is a moron. And the fashion in which the question was exposed as hypocrisy was done so beautifully, you'll never see that kind of subtlety in American cinema. Cheers in spades to everyone who enjoyed the depth of this wonderful and memorable movie.
No, he's not PERIOD. The fact that he's just different doesn't make him gay.
And I agree with those who have stated here that it's not the point of the movie to explain Billy's sexuality, but it is fair to say that they give enough evidence for the public to think that either he's not gay or he's just too young to care.
