Best actors/actresses on the show?

For me, in terms of talent, it probably goes as follows...

5. Lauren Ambrose (her expressions are amazing)
4. Richard Jenkins (just overall he did a great job with all the variations of his character)
3. Frances Conroy (her freakouts are especially impressive - and adorable)
2. Rachel Griffiths (she seems to really understand her character, she always felt perfectly real; see I'll Take You)
1. Michael C. Hall (I'm not really sure how much of an explanation is needed here)

The cast overall is really good, but I have to say Frances Conroy, Rachel Griffiths, Michael C. Hall and Peter Krause respectively.

reply

Of the main cast, I'd probably say:
5. George Cromwell
4. Rachel Griffiths
3. Lauren Ambrose
1. Frances Conroy [Tied]
1. Michael C Hall [Tied]

One interesting thing I feel I should point out is that, despite only appearing in seven episodes throughout the show's five-season run, two of the three Primetime Emmy Award wins the show won went to Patricia Clarkson for her role as Patricia Clarkson, which I think makes her the technical winner here (though I personally think the five actors I listed had better performances, and I'm not at all saying that to denigrate Clarkson's fantastic performance).

Three way tie for first: Lauren Ambrose, Rachel Griffiths, and Richard Jenkins.

1. Frances Conroy - I was not familiar with her before the show, and thought she was going to be a boring "mom" character in the pilot, but Ruth turned out to be the most interesting character in the series. Also, often, the funniest.

Hard to choose between the others, they are all good. Probably 2. Michael C. Hall 3. Lauren Ambrose 4. Rachel Griffiths 5. Peter Krause

Of the supporting players, Richard Jenkins, Jeremy Sisto, and James Cromwell stand out. Freddy Rodriguez is a wonderful actor, but I felt he was not given enough to do in the series. There were so many great supporting players in the show that it is hard to choose between them.

I'm stunned by the lack of attention for Peter Krause on this thread! He was hands down the core and glue of this series and his performance as Nate was all-time great. There's a reason he got most of the Emmy recognition in terms of nominations over anyone else, one of the few times I think an actor deserved that many nominations. I wonder if people are transferring Dexter over to SFU for Michael C. Hall. In terms of THIS show, Krause is #1 all the way.

Rachel Griffiths!

1. Conroy
2. Ambrose
3. Griffith

Some who haven't been mentioned:

---the guy who plays Mr Jones, the old black widower, the one who tells Nate to shut the f--k up, boy, and let an old man speak. He tore it up.

----Ileana Douglas as Angela

---Jeremy Sisto as Billy. Something poignant and haunting there.

---Rainn Wilson as Arthur; worthy to be in Monty Python, yet moving also.

And of course, roles like Olivier, Margaret Chenowith, Mitzi, Connor the naked Australian, Nikolai, etc.

I have just started the show but Brenda and Nate together are awful combination.

The show itself might have been very good around year 2005 or so but now 10 years later it does not get close to nowadays top shows. Main reason is that there is no strong general plot in this show.

reply

Then you're missing the point of the entire show. The basic plot of the series is following the everyday lives of the Fisher family.

reply

Yes I said there is no STRONG plot. I stopped watching this show. Way too boring characters for my taste in addition to boring plot.

reply

i think the plot was about inevitable death and how the characters come to terms with their own mortality, as well as the others...
