All the reviews I have read for this movie are real downers. My circle of friends loves this movie, and for good reason. I'm not sure what you were expecting, but the movie really is great if you can just run with some of the crazy plot.
I thought it was fun: lots of funny characters, but over confused plot. Oh, my, the sight of Jason Lee disguised as Jesus Christ Superstar....I nearly choked on my Coke.
It should've been a whole lot more popular. I love this movie, especially Johnny Knoxville's character. It's hilarious! Everyone should rent it and but it (if u dont already have it!)
I loved this film because it followed the book very closely. It was fun and very comical. One of Tim Allen's better movies. The normally vacant Johnny Knoxville was even funny in this one. I had a lot of fun with it and I think it's a real shame that it didn't get the attention it deserved. A lot of critics didn't like this one and I don't see any reason why. It just might be the most underrated movie of all time, but I'm willing to open a discussion about that.
The reviews of this movie aren't that bad... There are a few negative user comments here but overall comments are favorable. I agree... I loved this movie! Casting is fabulous and acting great! I've watched the DVD a dozen times since I got it and it still cracks me up. I bought and read Dave Barry's book when it came out and anxiously awaited the movie. It's going to go down as one of my favorite comedies of all time. The only thing that could have kept this movie from making money is 9-11, which is sad. The director's commentary on the DVD contains great insight and was very entertaining.
I never thought of it that way, but yeah, it's along that line. Quick Change is another one of my favorite movies of all time, extremely hillarious, and not very well known. At least not with most of the people I've talked to. Very underated film, much like this one. Big Trouble is outrageously funny. I watched it at 4 in the morning in bed, I was laughing so hard I had to cover my head with my pillow because I was afraid I was going to wake up my girlfriend. This is the funniest movie I've seen in a while, the last time I laughed that hard was when I watched the blair witch project. HAHA
I have been a big Dave Barry fan for quite a while, and read his column as well as all his book releases. When I heard he was working on a novel, I knew I'd have to get it. I read the book the week it came out, and spent the next 2 days laughing so hard that breathing was difficult. When I finished, I encouraged a co-worker to read it...he doesn't read fictional novels but I insisted...and he brought it back a week later saying he still had the headache from laughing so hard. I then gave it to my mother, who reads alot...and she too laughed herself sick, passing it on to my step-father to read on a trip.
Needless to say, there was a very large fanbase of people waiting for the movie once we heard about it.
Though I wouldn't say the movie was as good as the book, or completely faithful, I thought the narration helped to maintain the Barry style and feel, and some of the better comedic moments were beautifully and hilariously portrayed. My favorite scenes that caused ridiculous laughter amongst all my friends and I:
The toad and the dog. Absolutely hilarious.
Dennis Farina and the seatbelt. Noone could have pulled off the frustration without speaking better than Farina.
Gator fans. Too much!
The FBI agents and the Russians. Who would have thought a one-hit rapper could have been so funny?
The wormhole in the male universe. When Garofalo asks Warburton if he wants to sleep with her, the freeze frame before he speaks and the narration about the secret wormhole all men have been looking for, and the carefully worded response "yes", was legendary!
As already displayed here, there are obviously a nice group of people that love this movie... almost to the extent of a cult-like following (see above for the conspiracy theorist).
But think of it from the mass population's view...
The movie no doubt has it's funny, and even hilarious moments. But I can easily see why this movie's popularity sits where it currently resides. There are quite a handful of great movies that are too similar for this particular movie (remember, you are thinking like an avg run-of-the-mill movie-watcher). A comedic Pulp Fiction... Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels... Snatch... etc. There are going to be quite a load of people that see Big Trouble and afterwards, say, "good, funny, but I've seen it before elsewhere." Granted, Big Trouble is nothing but straight comedy, and while those other movies may not have been intended to be as comedic, their 'lets tie everyone and everything together' method was seen on the screen first. No matter how funny the movie is, the fact that the method of tying everyone together has been used several times (successfully) recently, really takes some of wind out of this movies sails. (Take Memento for instance, the story is good, but the method used for telling it really thrust that movie to where it's at in the IMDB ratings... no matter how great the next movie of similar style is, the fact that it's been done already almost assures that it will not be as well received as Memento, simply b/c Memento was first). Don't forget, you are still thinking like an avg run-of-the-mill movie-watcher.
The cast... while the cast of Big Trouble did entertain quite well, I couldn't help but think that it was missing something as a whole, or could have been done better.
And honestly... I don't see what is so bad about 6.5 rating here. Nor do I think critics C+s & Bs is all that bad either.
Anywho, as long-winded an my reply is... I think the original question of this thread is a very simple one to answer when you view it from the avg movie goers perspective. And what does it matter what they think... just because they don't like it as much as you or I do, my view hasn't changed a tune since my first viewing... great, entertaining film.
