.....then talk about a pretty legit film series. For real folks, if this is the worst installment in the series, that is a sign that this series is pretty goddamned legit and there is a reason it is the longest running film franchise that exists.
Had to be said, for all the trashing this movie gets
No, this isn't the worst of the series, its not even worst of the Brosnan era. Its the second best Brosnan bond after Goldeneye, but it still has serious weaknesses.
Connery's worst: You only live twice and Diamonds are Forever
Moore's worst: Man with the golden gun and A view to a kill
Craig's worst: Spectre
Brosnan's worst: Tomorrow never dies and The world is not enough
I disagree about this being second best after Goldeneye and better than Tomorrow Never Dies.....no way. Also, Connery didn't have a worst, his were all pretty solid.
The thing about the Brosnan Era for me is that none of his films are in my Top 10 but at the same time none of them are in my Bottom 5 (my Bottom 5 has 2 Craig, 1 Connery, 1 Moore and 1 Dalton). Having said that The World Is Not Enough is the weakest Brosnan Film IMO. It was great on paper but there were too many things that just didn’t make any sense (one awesome Pre-Title sequence however).
In fact, I don't suppose it will be long now (maybe another three or four years) before this receives a contemporary 180 in a similar fashion to how the much hated Dalton films currently appear to be more in vogue.
It's just going to take a bit more time before the blandness of the Craig films fully sets in and we get people beginning to write clickbait articles on how fun the Brosnan films are compared with the melodrama of the Craig era. Once that happens it will become cool to champion this film.
Going by Tomatometer rankings, it's not in the bottom three. Those are Octopussy, The Man with the Golden Gun and A View to a Kill, all starring Roger Moore as 007. It comes as the fifth worst, while The World is Not Enough is the worst Brosnan Bond at #4. I didn't count the original Casino Royale which is at the bottom.
Amongst the fifth worst on Metacritic, Die Another Day is not included. They are Live and Let Die, The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only, Tomorrow Never Dies and The Man with the Golden Gun.
It's not. In my opinion, the worst one is Quantum of Solace, which all but jettisons everything that makes Bond "Bond" and sets it apart from other action/thriller or spy movies (opera sequence notwithstanding).
Die Another Day isn't great, but there's some good stuff in there. The spy car battle is over the top, but fun, and I like Rosamund Pike.
QOS is bad but nothing is worse than No Time To Die.
Die Another Day had an over reliance on CGI and that definitely hurt it but it’s such a fun movie I cannot bring myself to hate it. Great guilty pleasure.
The CGI isn't great and I find Halle Berry overrated. But, yeah, it's not bad. I've found that I basically like James Bond, and as long as he's doing his James Bond thing, I'm in. If I feel like a goofier Bond, I go with Roger Moore. If I want something grittier, I'll look to Dalton or Craig. But there isn't really a "wrong" way to do Bond, just so long as they commit to actual 007.
That's what makes me dislike QoS: it just isn't Bond being Bond.
Now, don't get me wrong, I still recognise that there are better and worse Bond films - there's a world of difference between From Russia with Love and The Man with the Golden Gun - but I can enjoy almost all of them.
