(possible spolier) My heart sank when......

I saw li'l Yang Yang jump into the pool, and it appeared as if he had drowned. However, in two scenes later, we see him walk through the door drenched, with a conniving smirk on his face. Seeing him walk through that door was such an enormous relief.

Yang Yang, Ting Ting, and the man who plays the father, all gave tremendous performances in this film.

This film was such an absolute emotional roller coaster for me, and I salute Edward Yang for making it. Definately one of my favourites films to date.

when Yang Yang jumped into the pool,a great sorrow stroke me,i meant to give up the film then ,avoiding to confront the cruel ending. my friend stoped me ,fortunetly,the director arrange a unexpected outcome ,it just liked your words going: it was such an enormous relief

You're forgetting the earlier scene, when he was practising holding his breath in the bathroom sink.

Not only that, but there was thunder in the background. I thought he was going to get electrocuted.

And silly me, I wondered where the lifeguards were. Any adult supervision, really.

But the sign of a great movie (for me, anyway) is that you forget you're watching a movie. In that respect, Yi Yi is a great movie. We all worried deeply about the little boy.

I think it was not playing fair with the audience the way both that scene and the one with an apparent suicide turned out to both be fakeouts.
