I understand it's supposed to be a dream, but I found a lot of the jerky looking animation distracting. Wouldn't they have saved themselves a bundle of money by just using the original footage of the actors? And wouldn't it have been just as good?

Lucid dreams are according to me is impossible to show on celluloid cinema......I am sure in which way this movie should be presented, director definitely has gone through series of lucid dreams to finally come to this conclusion(Of blended Animation) 😂
There is another movie who's story is impossible to depict with such an raw emotions, The King of Pigs 2011
