Leather trench coat, shades, stylized gunplay/martial arts, oppressive regime in a dystopian sci-fi setting, taciturn hero with magic powers (sorta)...
This movie borrowed a lot of style and aesthetics from The Matrix beyond trench coats.
I get it: this movie is 1984 with ACTION!, but you can't see why people link these two movies up, at least in their minds? Especially given the proximity. 1999: Matrix, three years later (people are still talking about The Matrix): Equilibrium.
