Granted, the first is the best film and one of the best sci-fi films ever made.
But I just gravitated towards part 2 more. It really pushed the story into unexpected ways and the action was unlike anything seen before or after.

Me too. I love Reloaded. It's one of those rare "on the edge of your seat" type of movies. I didn't experience anything like before or after until Mad Max Fury Road came out recently.
The first Matrix, of course, is great but Reloaded took it to a whole new level. I remember how awesome it was seeing it for the first time. Made my skin tingle.

I just watched the entire trilogy again recently. It amazes me how these movies can be completely philosophical, puzzling, and action-packed all at once. You just don't see hard R movies for adults like this now-a-days
(of course, Mad Max Fury Road was a step in the right direction)
The Architect's scene, especially how it puts everything we assumed from the first film on its head, is amazing.
i ultimately rate movies based on my overall enjoyment of them and given that info as i just re-watched the trilogy (my previous re-watch of the trilogy was July 11th 2012) and my order of preference is now like this...
1.The Matrix Reloaded (2003) - 6-6.5/10
2.The Matrix (1999) - 6/10
3.The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
basically my interest in the second movie holds more stable throughout it than the first movie does.
prior to this viewing (Nov 2015) of the trilogy i used to think the trilogy was great, primarily the first two movies(first movie was a 9/10, second movie was a solid 8/10), for many years but not anymore as i only mildly like the trilogy nowadays.
p.s. for measure... only 257 movies currently got a 7/10 or higher score from me. 162 movies got a 7.5-8/10 or higher score from me. my 9/10 and 10/10 total count is only 50 movies. My Top 100-ish movies ever, linked to below, currently contains all movies i gave a SOLID 8/10 or higher to which is 95 movies.

I agree i loved the first 1 but reloaded is just superb specially that freeway car chase!! Really gets the Adrenaline flowing yeah definitely reloaded the one!!

The freeway chase, the Burly Brawl, the Chateau fight, all rank among my favourite action scenes of the trilogy.
It completely turned the original film on its head, story wise. We learn the prophecy was just another lie. I love Reloaded.

I also prefer this to the first one, with all that dialogue they set out to overturn the first movie, and confuse people who were not paying attention, whilst the music and fight direction goes up a notch too.
However, the rave scene and some bad casting/too many side characters does dilute a great sci-fi story. It just needed to be edited a little bit more (landing in Zion scene was way too long).
I remember even now watching this movie for the first time. When Neo fights the three agents he blocks the first punch and says "Upgrades" (in the coolest way possible). That was what this movie exactly was. An upgrade in each and every level. Contains some of the best action sequences I've ever seen.

I have been doing a big Matrix Marathon today and i still enjoy them although i can acknowledge the criticisms the sequels get.

The first Matrix is still one of my favorite movies of all time but Reloaded is very enjoyable and entertaining. The Chateau fight and the highway chase scene are the high points in the movie for me. Great stuff

Reloaded was the perfect sequel if you ask me. The first one was a great stand alone sci fi film and a greaf intro, which laid out everythig clearly with an excellent pacing. Reloaded was the rabbit hole: so many threads, uncertainties and additional unexpected levels to everything that was jntroduced in the first. It was risky but made the lore so much richer. Neo, Zion, the prophecy, the ideas behind the matrix and the fight against it were shown in a new light, instead of just continuing ahead on the established course. I wish they took a break between this and Revolutions to finish on a big and more inspired note but by itself this was an amazing sci fi movie.
