Was Alison really worth all that trouble?

Selling his soul and all? He didn't even know her but she came off as a real *beep* most of the time. I agree with Roger Ebert, even Elizabeth Hurley seemed more interesting, nicer (even though she was the devil), and she was sure as hell (no pun intended) hotter! I still really like this movie but thats something i always noticed. Alison never seemed "worth it" she seemed like a bitch. Yet she is the center piece to the whole movie. Nicky (Alison) just seemed annoying.

No - that was the whole point of the story.

A better match for Elliot was the ditz he met at the end. Elliot didn't really know Allison, he was just infatuated with her, probably because of her looks. Even if she wasn't with some other man and agreed to go on a date with him, Elliot would not have been able to keep her long term.

The ditz Nicki was more his speed personality wise, plus she had the looks that Elliot liked.

Wouldn't it have been funny if he fell for Hurley instead despite her being the devil

No she wasn't, and that was part of the point. He didn't really know her at all, and was just idealizing her based on her looks and what he imagined she was like. He was intent on changing himself to be whatever she was looking for, hence all the very different wishes. The whole movie is about him discovering who HE really is, and what a fun journey it is!
