Was Alison really worth all that trouble?

Selling his soul and all? He didn't even know her but she came off as a real *beep* most of the time. I agree with Roger Ebert, even Elizabeth Hurley seemed more interesting, nicer (even though she was the devil), and she was sure as hell (no pun intended) hotter! I still really like this movie but thats something i always noticed. Alison never seemed "worth it" she seemed like a bitch. Yet she is the center piece to the whole movie. Nicky (Alison) just seemed annoying.

Good call there. If I were to sell my soul to the devil in order to be with a woman, I would have to have had at least 2 conversations with that woman, not somebody I have never spoken to. For all Elliot knew Allison could be a member of the local KKK. Come on, get to know the woman before you sell your soul.

that's what Elliot is about...naive, desperate, & stupid.
I don't find Nicki annoying, she is charming, humble and kind.

Alison (in the real world) isn't a bitch at all, but is actually a nice lady & loyal to her man, she just doesn't want to give poor Elliot any high hopes on her and gets hurt, she says "no" to him politely, because she knew Elliot is a good man.

The real bitches & jerks were his co-workers.

I completely agree. But Elliot never spoke to her, and didn't know the first thing about her. My point is, talk to her to see if she's worth selling your soul.

Elliot was an outsider. He did anything for acceptance from his co-workers and Alison.

The alison character was not attractive at all to me. The characters she played in his wishes were all horrible women, and the slight bit we know of her outside of them she is aloof. I would stay away from that person because deep down she'd be a shallow money grubber. But that's my summation.

I know at least one woman I would sell my soul to be with...I don't know her that well (well enough though...), and she's not super-attractive. The point is, I'm a *beep* desperate loser.

Anyway what I don't get at the end, and it kinda ruins the entire movie, why introduce the love interest (who obv has diff, more suitable personality compared to Allison) who looks exactly like Allison?
Budget constraints? Come one!

She was his dream girl, and she became that based solely on her looks. At the end of the film, he was awarded for finally growing a pair by meeting someone he shared common interests with. I think the actress playing Allison represented "beauty" in the sense of the word and by introducing someone else with a different personality, but the exact same looks, the film makers were saying you can find that kind of beauty in anyone if you get off your ass and look.

I agree though, Alison didn't really seem worth all the trouble to begin with, even with him not really ever meeting her.

It's really interesting that some people refer casually to selling their souls to the Devil. Is it just a figure of speech for conversation, or would those people actually consider selling themselves into everlasting hellfire as part of a live-for-now philosophy?

I'm an atheist I don't believe in heaven hell or the supernatural in general. And even if I did I'm not so sure God at least the abrahamic one isn't malevolent. I'd feel we'd all be going to hell anyway so I might as well enjoy the short ride as much as possible.

Well the movie points out she was not worth it because she was not the right one for him. He picked her for the wrong reasons. Although if it was me, I would have used one of my wishes to hook up with the Devil.

I think he was an incredibly kind person who was very lonely and wanted to have someone to call his own but I think in the case of either one of them he would have been settling for less than he deserved.

i love watching this movie, but i must say the girl elliot is so desperate over, alison, comes across as a terribly off putting person, she makes the devil (elizabeth hurley) seem nice and it's a relief to see hurley back with elliot instead, i guess he is so into alison that he can't see it, though at one point of the movie he tells hurley "i know alison is not really like that", but i got that vibe from her at the very first scene she appears in (at the club) before the devil started setting up the dream sequences parts she's in, one scene i enjoyed watching her in though was the basketball locker room, that had some of the movie's funniest parts, of course elliot then, major spoiler follows here, meets a girl that looks identical as alison but with a different personality, contrasting really, by the way, notice her boobies in the scene with elliot as abraham lincoln, after he's bidden farewell to the devil you sort of wish for a sequel, i love this movie so much i actually don't want to see the original it's based on, usually it's the other way around, for me anyway, how you don't wanna see the remake, though i understand the dogs hurley has on a leash at the beach named dudley and peter is a wink to the original movie. i probably can't help but check it out one day. notice the name alison (or allison) is spelled differently in the credits and plot description.
