so why isn't Kida a Disney princess?

Hell, even Mulan is one and she isn't even close to being a princess.

reply

Mulan is in the line-up because the princesses represent different cultures (and Mulan's suppose to represent Asia). Kida's probably not in there because "Atlantis" is a PG-rated movie, making her too "adult" for the Disney Princess line-up (the franchise is suppose to appeal to girls under 10...or so it seems).

That would explain why Eilonwy isn't in there either. :/

"I think George Lucas is gonna sue somebody!"

reply

Either that, or because Kida and Eilonwy are (so far) the only princesses that don't sing, and according to Wikipedia, each "princess" in the franchise comes with their own themesong (Colors of the Wind= Pocahontas, etc.)

"Mah boi, this place is what all true warriors strive for!"- The King of Hyrule

reply

Rapunzel is in the line-up and she is from a PG movie.

Anyways I think that it is because Atlantis didn't do so well in it's theatrical run.

reply

What about the girl from The Princess And The Frog ? That girl is not a princess, but yet she's always mentioned on the princess list.

Think about this. Once bread becomes toast, you can't make it back into bread.

reply

She married a prince and thusly becomes a princess

Kida is too sexy for the disney princess lineup IMO also not enough girls saw this movie for her to be marketable

reply

You know what's kind of funny? Sleeping Beauty didn't exactly do well on its initial run either. I think it was after it got such a cult following, that they included her in the franchise.

"HOPSCOTCH!"

reply

^ Yes, that's correct. Sleeping Beauty did kinda "eh" at the box office. Also, though not a princess movie, Alice in Wonderland did bad at the box office. And look at its cult following. HUGEEEE.

Why, I'm an expert on padded cells.

reply

Kida probably isn't in the lineup because the princesses already in the lineup are somewhat "traditional." For example, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty are just animated versions of what a fantasy princess is to most people. Even Mulan is in the lineup because she fought for her sick father, which everyone is expected to be sufficient.

Or it could be that Disney prefers to keep the innuendo behind the curtain. I remember seeing Atlantis when I was little and my friends (I'm a guy) would ALWAYS make at least one remark "She's hot!" Can't imagine someone saying that about Sleeping Beauty. I also remember when this movie came out, I loved it. My young mind registered that Kida was good-looking but that doesn't really affect the overall movie. But there were the middle-class suburban yuppie soccer moms that were always saying to my mom "Could you believe that s l u t in the new Disney movie? It's not the same as when we were kids."

Of course, this is the same generation that grew up watching Lady And The Tramp; if you've seen this movie after you hit pubery you're sure as hell gonna notice some things.

Well there are people who do find middrif baring Ariel and Jasmine hot. Heck! They even appeared on the Nostalgia Critic's "Top 11 Hottest Animated Women" list.

So with that said I would argue that it has to do more with the whole "it just wasn't a success" thing. But as I mentioned, Sleeping Beauty didn't exactly click with audiences at first so who's to know. And if they do feature Kida in the line-up they might show her in that dress she wears at the end. (Although the sequel confirms that she is Queen now so I'm not sure if that would disqualify.)

"Frying pans! Who knew right?"

reply

I think that would be correct, however if that is the case than Ariel, Belle and one or two others should not be considered because with the beast parents dead or not there, he should be king and belle his queen. Same thing with Arield and Eric, we never see his folks, so he must be king and ariel queen. I love topics like this

reply

I don't understand.
Kida looks horrifying.

reply

I work at Disney, at a character dining restaurant, and I was asking one of the character attendees about this. Kida is considered a princess, but because Atlantis didn't do that well, she's not marketed with the others.

reply

It always makes me mad that Kida isn't considered a princess with all the others. But Mulan is! The reason is obviously because it didn't do well in the box office which is sad because this is such an underrated movie. I hope one day they'll include her with the others like she deserves.

Reading The Book Thief made me cry more than Titanic.

she is a disney princess. she's not in the official line.

reply

I'm enjoying this thread but i cant resist a joke.

She's not marketed with The Disney Princesses because that would Make Milo a King...and we cant have an academic as a king!

reply

The movie bombed. They include popular characters in the princess line to make merchandise, so they can make money off of them. Kida isn't that popular, so they're not going to waste their money on making merchandise of her.

Sucks, because I thought Kida was a really good character.

reply

shes not the star

reply

Mulan and Pocahontas was the main characters in their movie. Kida was not a main character therefore she is not a Disney Princess. Maybe if they had a Disney prince line up then the guy from this movie would be in that line up because he's the main character and he married a princess.

reply

Kida is a princess b/c her father is the king of Atlantis. I wish that they had dolls of her b/c I like her.

reply

Jazmin is in the line-up and she wasn't the main character in her movie(s) either.

reply

Yes she was. They both were the stars, the story wasn't just about Aladdin, it was about the both of them. It is possible to have more than one main character in a t.v. Show or movie. We learned just as much about her as we did Aladdin.

reply

I think it comes down to the level of success a movie has had and whether the princess is the main character or not. The Black Cauldron and Atlantis don't seem to have had the same mainstream success as that of other Disney princess movies and both characters were not the main protagonists of the storyline. A shame as I'd love to see Princess Eilonwy and Princess Kida added to the line up.
