Why is Paul a loser?

Who is calling who a loser? Since when is a serious hard-working student considered a loser? To me, his roommates were losers. They were spoiled, shallow and didn't take anything seriously.

Not a ''Loser'' but certainly he was out of his element. His roommates were creeps and though the movie is a romantic comedy it's more a tale of overcoming classist barriers. Both him and Dora were lower middle class kids scraping by in a university where most of the students were from a well to do background and felt a sense of entitlement. The bit about Dora trying to sell her eggs for more money for school and rent is all too familiar even to this day.
