Just way too...grimey!

Too dirty and dingy. It’s offputting. If the story and characters were good enough to make up for it, that would be one thing. But the story and characters were as dusty and smelly as the tone and look of this effing off-putting movie.

Who would ever watch this twice?

reply

Probably not dirty and grimy enough to be authentic, the whole film is about people who think that running water is a luxury for rich people.

I have no objection to films about grubby people, if they're in a situation where they have no choice to be grubby. I just object to films where I don't give a rat's ass what happens to any of the characters, since they're all assholes.

A fair point.

This is a movie about people whose insides are even filthier than their outsides!

Why the hell would anyone want to watch a movie about people like that.

reply

Cuz it’s great

reply

Well, it's nice that one person likes the movie.

I share all your views, Otter. I watched it once, and will not revisit it. Martin Scorsese disappointed me by going on record that he would not do more crime movies, then he squeezed out this turd. Mea culpa: I have never understood the enthusiasm for Daniel Day Lewis. The guy is just not a movie star.

This film is not in my video library.

I've seen it a few times, i enjoy it for what it is. I don't share your ridiculous complaints..

These comments sound like they were made by Beverly Hills high school cheerleaders!

This reminded me of the beginning of Perfume: The Story of A Murder (2006) There was nothing glamorous about that time period. People were literally throwing their shit and urine out on the streets. People didn't regularly bathe and meat was so rotten that they actually invented ketchup so you wouldn't be able to taste how rotten your meat was. My god, the smell must have been unimaginable. Paints a picture doesn't it?
