This film is execrable. I remember seeing it in the theater and it was a mess, I had no idea what I was watching. Seeing it now it is the same thing, hideous, boring, the story goes nowhere and two of the worst and most douchebag looking actors of all time. Crazy lunatic neurotics that go crazy in their roles and they think it's acting.
It's so damn bad. Only the names attached gave it prestige. But this film isn't living on like Pulp Fiction. Nobody is gonna remember this turd in 20 years.
I agree. Saw it for the first time last night. I love gangster movies and my friend couldn’t believe I had never seen it and was singing its praises. It was a stinker. Daniel Day Lewis was amazing though, but, it’s Daniel Day Lewis, I’d expect nothing less..
Calling a movie that is even remotely decent "one of the worst films ever made" is such a lazy and overused insincere sentiment. Obviously, there are thousands of movies that were made that are worse than this, from any reasonable perspective.
I am almost 180 degrees from OP on this one, but even without my ardent love for this film in the way, you're right. There is no way this is one of the worst movies ever made. I could see somebody arguing that, given the talent and budget, it's a film with a high discrepancy between expectations and reality...
...if I didn't utterly love it. It's one of my all-time favourite films, one of Scorsese's best, and contains basically brilliance from end-to-end. I'm the only person on the planet who doesn't mind Cameron Diaz in the film, either. But everything from the historical tidbits sprinkled in the film to the performances to the epic scope of this revenge tale - it's all so bounteous. "Amsterdam? Well, I'm New York." I could drink that dialogue.
I love it too, but even if were MSs worst film, it's still better than the majority of movies released. I agree with Diaz. She's never an acting powerhouse, but she was fine in this.
Yeah, MS at his worst is still pretty great. Although I haven't watched EVERYTHING he's ever done.
Diaz is funny because I have felt like she is about a half-inch away from blowing me away in something, but she never quite has. She's good in Gangs of New York, she's good in Being John Malkovich, she's good in There's Something About Mary, but she's never just far enough to be brilliant; I always felt like she was *close* though...
For my money, this is one of the most underrated Scorsese pictures of all-time, and it would easily make my top three out of his filmography. The acting alone makes it worth watching (Daniel Day Lewis in one of his best roles - and that's saying something!) but on top of that, the film has a great look and feel, provides insights into the era and location of the movie, and has some intricate and fascinating characters and relationships.
