Why did Priest Vallon have a son?

Priest Vallon is Irish so I'm assuming he is a Catholic priest? If so, how is it that he has a son? I know it's possible, but as a ordained priest, he could not be married right? So is it just that maybe he became a priest after his son was born? Or he was priest but left and is now just regarded as priest by his peers? Or maybe Amsterdam isn't even his son, just an adopted orphan? It was just a little confusing to me.

Well, he's a murdering gang fighter, so clearly he is not an actual priest.

I always got the impression that Priest is the nickname given to him by either the Irish gangs (who see him as their righteous leader who, unlike the church, will condone fighting to the death) or the Natives (who use it mockingly, seeing as how they despise Catholicism and see him righteously leading the Irish)

Or it's just the first name his religious parents gave him for their own reasons. Maybe he changed it himself. But it's obvious that this man is not and never has been an ordained Priest.

Well to put it in perspective, there are a decent amount of popes who had legitimate and illegitimate children. Even if he is a legitimate priest, it would not be that crazy for him to have a kid, being a gang leader from the five points.

Here are the possible options:
1) He is not a real priest and those rules dont apply to him.
2) He was married or fathered his son before he became a priest.
3) He was a priest, but had his son before or after leaving the priesthood.
4) He is a priest and has a son, and no one really cares.
5) He adopted his son, either before or after becoming a priest.
6) His "son" is not his son, but is either a nephew or relative or a kid hanging around that has some connection to him.

Whatever the real story is, I dont think it makes too much of a difference. Amsterdam considers Vallon as a father figure and is motivated by his death, whether or not he is actually biologically related.
