Completely historically inaccurate

I know that this is based off a fictional account of the history of New York, but... this had almost NO fact in it whatsoever, aside from mentioning that the civil war was going on. But wait, literally... I learned nothing from this film. I was hoping it had some basis in real chronological events or something. Nope. I would have learned much more watching Gone With The Wind. This movie was a complete waste of time.

How the hell is that relevant to being a good story? I mean Django Unchained isn't based on something that actually happened, and that movie was entertaining. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly wasn't a true story but yet again, it was a good *beep* movie. Regarding Gangs of New York, the sets that were built for Five Points are on point and based on photographs that were taken from the era. And the story between Amsterdam and The Butcher supposedly went down before the Civil War took place which would mean that the story is based in truth. This movie did portray plenty of facts regarding the corruption in Tammany Hall, as well as how poorly Irish immigrants were treated (among many other immigrants). The over all depiction of New York was spot on as well. Not to mention the interaction between upper and lower class. This is a prelude of the Gilded Age in America. One of the things that a lot of people fail to understand is that there was a great deal more going on in this country during the times of The Civil War than the war itself and this movie depicts that perfectly. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly also depicts that in a very unique light. I simply have to disagree with you and find it offensive that you would give such a crude and unfair analysis of what is a fantastic movie.

I have two family bibles and letters begun in the 18th century from Eire and brought to New York City,a difficult task in itself. They are very detailed, sadness balanced with Marriages and numerous little babes and children....they will stay in family.
One thing was repeatedly mentioned and continues that makes this film effort terribly marred. The gangs that the Maloneys,Morgans and McVeighs,me ancestors never ever spoke to negroes...and the last insult was to have a woman fighting in our gangs!I read of Grace O'Malley..but Negroes...No! The film is a bust.

You are incredibly, disgustingly, and offensively racist. It is clear why most other posters ignore you. I shall do likewise.

It depends on the intent and claims of the film makers. They can either overtly claim historic accuracy, or covertly insinuated it.

If the film dies indeed at the beginning say "this is my memories and dreams"...then well, it could be an "out". But then again it depends on other statements and tactics as well.

At the end of it- despite any intent- these big Hollywood films are fables at best, ,mindless entertainment at worst.

If you are concerned about real historic accuracy- pick up a history book and be very careful about THAT too!

I really don't get the complaint... Was the OP expecting a history documentary or something???

What I've gathered from this whole thread is that we need to nuke all the Jews and the whales. That will solve everything.

Why would you look for fact in a fictional movie lol

I know, like, duh, it wasn't even filmed in the 1800s so, like, you know, it's obvious the whole thing is staged.
