Needed a great director + producer

The idea is there, Arnold is there, the money was there. It could have been great.

But this needed a great director, like Verhoeven or Cameron or McTiernan, and a decent producer to put the money on the screen and have the lame parts rewritten.

This turd is the result of second rate director and producers: something that costs 80million+, wastes all the themes and possibilites to focus on useless crap, and looks like a tv movie starring Lorenzo Lamas.

Too bad.

Ahaha, guess I'm quite late on this one!
I saw it today for the first time, I didn't even know it existed and I was impressed that there was a clone-movie with Arnold in good form. It fell totally under my radar.
I wasn't expecting much because, had it been any good I would have had heard about it, yet I was sorely disappointed by the results.
But yeah, we totally agree on it!

I saw it when it came out and was disappointed, along with Eraser. He didn't have a good run after True Lies.

I like this movie. I saw it in theaters whenit came out. It's not his best movie but it certainly is not his worst.

OK it's not his worst, but it had some potential to be good and it was tv movie level. Lots of unacceptable action and lots of muddled sci fi for a movie with an A lister.

I guess it depends on the expectations, even if this one looked weak I expect excellence, and I was surprised by how good Arnold still was and how the material was inspiring.
Still this was a turd, you were probably expecting a turd so you were fine with it.

Well said. I felt that the director did not get a good performance from Arnold, like he turned up not quite sure what the film was going to be like and all his and the other actors' (particularly the thugs) pacing and stuff was off. If they had put together everyone from Total Recall it would have been so much better. Arnold's paycheck alone was $25m. If he had a better director like Verhoeven or Cameron then they would have extracted a much better result from him.

I saw this when it came out and remember liking it. I just watched it again now and was surprised how cheap it looked. It really does look like a tv movie. I didn't notice that back then. This could have been good with a different director but now it's barely watchable.

Yes, unfortunately it is quite glaring, probably in a theatre on the big screen with popcorn, loud speakers and the involvement of being there you did not notice it that much.
I have had the same experience with other movies, that seemed super funny in the cinema, then barely ok when watched again at home.

The guy that directed it was hot off directing a bond movie (8th highest grossing box). His stock was rising at the time

I like it and think it should be be shown more. It aired quite often back in the day. This is one that I would stop and watch anytime I would be flicking through the channels and happen to catch it on.
