I saw this year's ago in high school and didn't think it was all that bad. Even my peers hated it. Why do people here it, and most all the hate on Bay. I read a comment they tried to give it away nobody would take it LOL too funny. If I who bay is much but all this hate on towards him is pretty funny! LOL
The movie is very long and in many respects historically inaccurate. The strongest scenes in this film are undoubtedly those of the attack itself, especially those scenes related to the capsizing of the Oklahoma and the caring of the dying/gravely wounded sailors at Hospital Point. The depiction of the Doolittle Raid was also passable. But like so much else in the film (especially everything leading up to the actual attack on Pearl), it felt thrown together to satisfy a popular narrative. This is a reason why "Pearl Harbor" is often compared to "Titanic," since the directors in both films managed to depict well-known historic event through a romantic (albeit melodramatic) storyline.
For a much more historically accurate depiction of the Pearl Harbor attack, I'd recommend "Tora Tora Tora," even though it's an older and slower paced film.
This is the first time I've seen this movie - having heard all these years how bad it was. But today is the 75th Anniversary of the Attack on Pearl Harbor, it's cold and snowy outside, I have some good wine, so I thought I'd indulge myself. My dad fought in WWII in the Pacific theater, but was not at Pearl Harbor, btw.
So, halfway through the movie, I can't get over how white everyone's teeth are. And someone here mentioned there are no smokers. Lots and lots of those in the service at that time were smokers. My dad said he started because they were bored a lot of the time (when they weren't being shot at).
I know the story of the attack, having watched so many Nat Geo and History channel docs - I'm kind of a history nerd. It will be interesting to see how many facts they have right/wrong.
But for now, I'm only up to the point where Ben Affleck just returned after MIA for a few months. It was a few months right? He went missing and his best buddy comforted his girl. Next scene says "three months later," and buddy takes girl flying, capped off with a roll in the hay (in the parachutes). So at the most he was gone 4-5 months?
Ben returns and she cries implying that she is not in love/or not faithful/or doesn't want him anymore. OK, he's been gone a few months!! And she's like, "Well gee sweetheart, I waited about 120 days and I decided you must be dead, so I felt like I needed to have sex with your friend."
So yeah, this movie is turning out to be pretty bad. Can't wait to see how much worse it gets!
If it helps, I think you endured the worst parts; film actually isn't all that bad once you get to the actual attack (minus the ridiculous ben & friend scene of being the only pilots to get in the air part).
Trying to figure out the worst part of Pearl Harbor is akin to determining the worst part of diarrhea. Overall it's just a crappy experience from beginning to end, that leaves you empty and asking yourself: "why did I have to endure this?"
