Faye Wong way better than Zhang Ziyi

Is Faye Wong the greatest actress in the world? Or am I blinded by love? I enjoyed her story 50X as much as zhang ziyi's story. I fell in love with Faye Wong in Chungking Express, and she was amazing in this too. Zhang Ziyi's getting all this attention (and a nomination - good job) for geisha following a lot of praise for this movie. Now I don't think Ziyi is a bad actress, I was just really let down by my lack of affection for her, i usually adore the leading ladies in wkw movies.(Maggie Cheung is the 2nd best actress ever!) So she was a big dissapointment for me. Still I hope Ziyi wins an oscar, then we'll really be copying asian cinema. Anyway, I think Faye Wong trumps, nay, dominates Zhang Ziyi in every catagory (she's even amazing at singing! what can't Faye Wong do?) except that Ziyi is really sexy while Wong is really cute. ummm... back to the point, which one do you like more (for acting or whatever else) and why?

Reading this point a 2nd time, It sounds a bit stalker creepy and I think I need some help... What if Faye reads this? I LOVE YOU FAYE!

Faye Wong is so much more charismatic and cute than Ziyi. Ziyi comes off as a biatch - in other movies and even off-screen.

Tony Leung is quite possibly the worlds finest actor. Im a 22 year old Australian, and i can honestly say that he is at least as good as any Western actor.

You know, it sounds like a compliment but it's actually an insult.
No kidding. Tony Leung acted best as always and can beat any Western actor - to degrade Chinese actors as "the best is the average of Westerners" is very insulting.

I say Ziyi's acting was more raw in this movie and Faye was more sophisticated. It reflects how Chow (Tony's character) perceived them. They're just different. I don't think one's better.

If ya like old actresses I guess she kind of is ok.

Christy Brinkly is better then her though. Heck Dolly Parton is better then her. Look at Dolly's story! It's way more in depth and full of drama.

Or Patsy Cline, dude she was THE actress/singer but died like james dean.

Zhang Ziyi had the more compelling character. Men are always intrigued by why Tony Leung would break her heart as such.

Faye Wong's character was nice (the innocent untouchable that Tony eventually loves, but can never have because she belongs to another man) but I think it was a little too detached, unlike Zhang's character's storyline, which is much more viceral.

...............and Gong Li was better than them both.

Faye Wong is cute (looks a little like Audrey Tatou?), but Ziyi really, really stood out in this movie. I always thought she was a little overhyped, too, but I think this was one of the best performances I've ever seen.

And everyone loves Gong Li, but I really think she is getting type cast as a femme fatale/MILF as she's gotten older.

Ok there's a lot of fanboys on here and rightfully so... the bottom line is... Gong Li is the original, always will be and always is the best actress. Faye is great but like some have mentioned, she only plays that quirky strange type of character which is pretty much a representation of herself. A Good actress is someone who can do any kind of acting whether be it an evil villain, a hero, or whatever.
Zhang on the other hand, seems to always have the fiesty, b!tchy attitude behind her although she does that very well too. The bottom line is Gong Li is still on a class of her own and she is also the most Beautiful of the three, if you don't believe me, watch some of her older stuff, considering she is in her 40s, she is still gorgeous. btw, i don't know if anyone here knows this but zhang ziyi was originally called little Gong Li, meaning she gong li is still on a whole 'nother level.

I do like all three btw as I've owned many Faye albums and I also don't mind zhang ziyi but to compare them to a pure actress such as gong li is silly at best....

Gong Li is overrated. And it is in part that in her heyday she had no real (promoted/hyped) competition.

She continues to be emotional remote and cold; so it's so-called "beauty" that gets the praise.

Zhang Ziyi had so much screen time -- it's the longest, and most involved, relationship Tony has with any of the females in the film -- because her performance deserved it.

"zhang ziyi was originally called little Gong Li, meaning she gong li is still on a whole 'nother level."

False and nonsense. She was called "little Gong Li" because she was the next most significant discovery by Zhang Yimou after Gong Li.

Zhang Ziyi was devastating, in all respects, in "2046". Gong Li was properly a peripheral character -- there more for name-recognition than anything else. (And Kar-Wai was also making a film with all the then-current top actresses he ould fit in.)

Even Maggie Cheung, who wasn't in the film, represented a more important character.

Faye can never be considered as an actress, as she never "acts". I would not really call that deadpan woodenly expression a form of acting.

Even I think her music career is far way too overrated.

So glad she retired for good.

You can't really compare as they are very different .. if they did the same roll, the interpretation would maybe tell us something.

My impression is that Zhang Ziyi is visually stunning, she knows how to show expressions well. I think she has worked at it hard, and Zhang Yimou really taught her how to be successful. She has a real sweatness mixed with being tough .. hope she can keep the balance.

Faye Wong always has music associated to her characters, and she brings life to the music so well. Faye is interesting because you catch her character almost in her non-verbal natural looks and movements. She is also interesting as you can tell there is something going on in her head we just do not know about -- I suspect a phychology person would say she has insulated her "inner child" from her outer interactions -- but it is seen in her eyes and odd looks here and there.
