Don't get how this is considered one of the greatest foreign films

I'm not trying to start a thread on bashing Amelie. I watched it, was intrigued with the idea and would recommend it to anyone who hasn't watched it yet.

I just don't get how this is considered one of the greatest foreign films ever. Why is it so well considered? Or is it the cool thing to claim it is an all-time great?

I've only seen about 25 foreign films and Amelie wouldn't make my top 10. Films like M, Seven Samurai & The 400 Blows are greats, not Amelie

7/10

Yeah, I liked it, but I probably wouldn't even put it in my top 100 non-English language films.

I would have liked it better without the love story. The love story just didn't work for me, and the final act was way too drawn out. I would have liked it more if the entire film had been focused either on Amelie tracking down the owner of the box she found in the bathroom wall, or if it had been focused on her doing various things to help others as she'd been doing for the first half-plus, spurred on by tracking down the owner of the box.

There are plenty of great things about the film, including the gorgeous production design, the quirky, fast-paced narration and black comedy of the early section, the setting and characters and actors are all very charming, etc. but overall, I just didn't feel it was one of the best ever.
