The worst in the trilogy

In my opinion, The Mummy Returns is the worst of the series. The Mummy combined some quite good horror with some very good jokes, while Tomb of the Dragon Emperor made up for its deficiencies in humour and character with stunning visuals and a more serious tone.

The Mummy Returns just wasn't very funny, and the storyline wasn't engaging. I found the antics of the kid messing with the cultists tiring, and the Scorpion King was some of the worst CGI I have ever seen in a mainstream film. Some nice scenes in Ancient Egypt, but overall a poor film.

Rachel Weisz was fine, though, and I'm not just referring to her acting.

Well as far as I know, most of the people who even come here to talk on this board would disagree with you, including me.

On the note of the Scorpion King CGI work, what did you expect, exactly, from a 2001 film, where this film marked one of the first films ever made to create a (more or less) "realistic" CGI face. It doesn't look that great, but I was blown away when I saw it for the first time. So were my parents. So were many others I knew.

Okay, I know that it was back in 2001 when this entry was released, but I have seen better CGI & integration in not only it's predecessor, but also various other films that came before it, such as the T-1000 from Terminator 2, a fair share of dinosaurs from Jurassic Park, Walter Donovan's death from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the cartoon slapstick of The Mask, etc. I'm not trying to be unfair in this comparison, my intention was to try to get a point across, especially given how I couldn't help but laugh at the cartoony look & sub-par integration of The Mummy Return's CGI effects. Granted those of Tomb of the Dragon Emperor & Van Helsing (both of which I personally agree with the late Roger Ebert on liking as popcorn entertainment that didn't need to be high art lol) can be a bit cartoonish as well, but at least not to Returns's extent, and the integration was a decent-sized improvement.

I thought that the third one sucked. So what if the second one wasn't very funny. there was more chemistry between the actors in the second then there was in the third one.

reply

What do you mean trilogy? As far as I recall there are only two of these films! That piece of *beep* other one, doesnt count.

I agree. Despite the overkill action & "exciting" things going on, The Mummy Returns is just not engaging, at all. It's a good looking film, though, and it has a fun, adventurous spirit, it's just not compelling or interesting.

reply

The first one was the best one. I love the first film.

Clark's destiny = Superman, Lex Luthor & Lois Lane.

reply

I saw mummy returns before the mummy. Im not even sure i was aware there was a first one at the time i saw "Returns" one at the cinema.

But i enjoyed returns immensely at the cinema, but now when i watch it, it is the opening of the film i tend to remember up to when their son is kidnapped on tower bridge and the scenes where the mummy and his queen are overlooking sommers version of old london, which is basically about the first 50 minutes of the film.

So the first 50 mintues of this film is really great, the music, the atmosphere and the general feel of the movie. Not to say there arent some nice scenes later on in the film though.

I don't think many people can argue against the fact that Rachel Weisz did a FANTASTIC job in this film. I never bothered to see the third one for the SOLE reason she wasn't in it. that in my opinion, automatically makes the 3rd one the worst.

She chose not to do the film whether it was because she did not want to take her new baby to China or leave her home (other actresses do it) or because her head was too swelled from winning her Oscar to fit in the plane. I was leery of Maria Bello's casting (only having previously known her from e.r.),but I think she did a very good job, especially in nailing Weisz' accent, and her chemistry with Brendan Fraser (which fueled the UNTRUE rumours that they had an affair during filming that caused the break-up of his marriage) was much better than his chemistry with Weisz in The Mummy Returns.

she chose not to be in cheap cash-in, And I respect her for that. In my opinion, the third movie should have never been made. TMR is one of those movies that wraps everything up in a nice little package with a pretty bow, in that it makes you feel the story has reached a satisfying conclusion and there is nothing more that can be effectively done with these characters. Even when the movie was first announced and Weisz was on the cast list I wasn't really looking forward to it.

She also did not want to play the mother of a twenty one year old. Brendan Fraser spoke out against that as well but he still honored his contract and his loyalty to the franchise. Unfortunately for him, Universal does not possess those virtues.

I liked TMR. It's a relentlessly action-packed, funny addition to the franchise. However character development does appear to have taken a back seat to the CGI - filled narrative.

To be fair, the main characters were already established from the first film so are you referring to the new supporting cast ( the three idiots, the museum curator,Izzy, etc ?)

"I say,open this door at once! We're British !"

reply

No; the main characters. Yes, they were established, but there's very little development in their characters given the 10 year time span. We don't find out a whole lot more about them. We are just left to assume.
A very basic example; Rick asks Ardeth Bay how does he come to be in London. The question is never really answered because of the imposition of yet another action set piece.

reply

True.

She didn't like the script she openly said so, don't make stuff up just to justify your dislike for the actress please

I am not "making stuff up". Perhaps you are not as "informed" as you seem to think you are.

No you are making stuff up. And sore cause Weisz wasn't in it. You literally said so, that she was gloating because of her Oscar. You know jealousy won't get anywhere right? I'm happy she didn't take the awful mummy3 script also very happy that she doesn't take any kind of bad scripts just to earn money unlike some actors nowadays.

Some of the worst acting on Patrica's part, during the resurrection/flashback scene. Plus, the writing was atrocious. When Alex knocks over the pillars a la Evie in the first film with the bookshelves. I mean come on. It's clear they were blatantly doing a copy of the first movie - "a bird, a stock."

Only grace was Brendan and Rachel.

I actually enjoyed the repetitions in the 2nd movie. For me they worked without being too forceful on the audience. They were at the right time and were put there for the right reasons. When I watch a sequel or a series, I always look for scenes and quotes that were in the original one. That's the fun part of a sequel. So, the "a bird, a stock" said by Alex in Returns just brought back pleasant memories of when his uncle said that in the first movie. Same thing with the pillars/bookshelves. It gave me a sense of continuity.

I loved the "past life" and reincarnation scenes.
The third one was the worst. And if you dont think so then you obviously haven't seen it.

reply

The third one is the worst, it killed the franchise. That's why they are rebooting it.

yeah it did?! nothing against maria bello, but shes NO evy. not even close. worst fake british accent ive ever heard. a disappointment especially when you have two of the best martial artists in (the) film. took a chance and saw it in the theatre anyway tho, like i did the first two.
