I personally believe that games like Halo, Gears of War, the N64 version of The World is not Enough and Everything or Nothing are much better than this overrated game. Don't get me wrong, I like the game, but it is extremely overrated.
shareWithout Goldeneye you probably wouldn't have Halo, Gears of War or COD. It set the standard for FPS in its day. Of course it weren't hold a candle next to those games now because of graphics and plot. Just like the first Zelda of Final Fantasy set the standard for RPG.
shareThe World is not Enough had terrible multilayer... and everything else you mentioned wasn't even for N64. The only other N64 shooter that rivals GoldenEye is Perfect Dark, which is basically GoldenEye II. No shooter that came before GoldenEye is better than GoldenEye. Yes, it's even better than Doom & Wolfenstein 3D, but I guess it's not really fair to compare GoldenEye to them since they came out 5 years earlier.

While I love me some Goldeneye, it is slightly overrated. The fps it runs at during heavy onscreen battles makes it nearly unplayable at times, it is definitely lag central. Graphically if your playing it on anything other than a CRT display it looks atrocious. I believe the N64 is one of worst aged consoles, even the NES and SNES doesn't have the blurry and murky textures that the N64 does.
It was great playing it back in the day but taking the nostalgic goggles off for a second, we have definitely advanced at creating more smoother console shooters.
