When is there going to be the next iconic teen movie..?

Okay there was Mean Girls which was four years ago and this movie and many others but there has not been that 'Mean Girl' type cult movie ever since and its ticking me off. Kirsten Dunst and Lindsey have all grown up and so have the others..Is it only High School Musical [which im not keen on] that we have to feast on....... I think it was 2006 when Shes the man came out which was pretty good..but still...the teen sensation genre has nearly died out!!!....

I really hope HSM is not all our generation has to look forward to. The only movies that have come close, in my opinion, are those produced from the Apatow crowd.

I'm sure the time is near. Many claim that the mid to late 90s were the biggest years of teen flicks, but in all honestly there have always been stages in each decade that has big teen iconic flicks. The late 90s brought so many up and coming teen actors in these iconic teen flicks that crossed over to the new millennium for a while. After 2002 the teen flicks began to fade away again and there have been a few teen flicks that hit from time to time. Mean Girls has probably been one of the last few films of this decade that have really made it as an iconic teen flick. I'm sure that by 2011 and on there are going to be some teen flicks that are going to start catching the interest of the new generation and will once again bring Teen Flicks back for a few years, then they will fade away.

As of those that are just growing out of our teens, we will always and forver remember these films as the best teen flicks of our generation. I remember Never Been Kissed, Cruel Intentions, Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legends, American Pie, She's All That just name dropping out of the top of my head. Our teen actors are all grown up and some are doing well and others are disappearing but that's the magic of movies, they get put on DVD and we can relive them forever.

Yeah, I miss the 90's and early 00's teen films. I can watch Bring it on, Never Been Kissed, Scream, The Faculty, House Arrest, Mean Girls, Bring it on 3 and Get over it all day since it brings back some great memories. The films they have out today is a joke and if they make more teen films lets hope none of those current Disney stars aren't in them especially Hannah Montana chick because she is a poor actress. Man I miss Drew Barrymore, Kristen Dunst, Neve Campbell and etc.

Besides Mean Girls and The Girl Next Door, nothing in the past few year has stood up to Clueless and Scream. I definetly think even Bring it On, Shes All That and other fluff-movies are much more enjoyable than the crap thats out now.

The "John Hughes-style" teen movie itself suffered a backlash in The Nineties, as Heathers' deconstruction of many of the tropes associated with those films made it harder to take their messages and characters seriously as representative of actual teenagers. Like the teen sex comedy, "lighter" teen comedies made a comeback in the mid '90s, starting with Clueless (a reconstruction of the genre) and continuing with films like She's All That, Can't Hardly Wait, Bring It On, Never Been Kissed, Drive Me Crazy, Get Over It, Whatever It Takes, and 10 Things I Hate About You. Not Another Teen Movie in 2001 and Mean Girls in 2004 were arguably the Genre Killers, with the former viciously parodying the tropes of the genre (as well as those of teen sex comedies) and the latter raising the bar by tackling a slew of real-life youth issues in a way that made a lot of earlier films look uncomfortable in hindsight. While the better films from both periods are still remembered as classics, many of the other efforts, while successful in their day, are now looked back on as saccharine and unrealistic, remembered solely for '80s/'90s nostalgia.

Don't forget Clueless, it's an oldie but a goodie.

I put a razor blade in that apple!

That is sort of true. Although all three HSM movies are good so they shouldn't be discounted just because they are Disney. Just my personal opinion but I believe "Fired Up" fits the bill nicely for the later 00's teen movies. It's really funny and plausible but has been pretty underrated.

Dude, nobody has mentioned Twilight!! :P You might not like it, but it sure as heck is iconic. And what about Step Up? Not as big as Mean Girls, of course, but that was quite popular and did end up getting 2 sequels. I personally loved She's the Man. Also what about Juno and Superbad? And this new movie Easy A might be the next big one, it follows the pattern of Clueless and She's the Man by using a classic story in a high school setting, and looks good from the trailers anyhow. I guess we'll see!

I don't think twilight is an iconic TEEN movie when you compare it to clueless and bring it on. Most teens don't deal with vampires.

I think Easy A is turning into the new teen iconic movie- I saw it and LOVED IT.

reply

Yeah I don't know, even though Twilight is meant for like 12 year olds, it doesn't really belong in the same category as Mean Girls, Clueless, Bring It On, She's All That, Cruel Intentions, Scream, etc.

It's way too different. It's not a movie about teen life. It's about "eternal love." Pssh.

I think it might be a little early to call Easy A iconic, but I have seen it like 50 times since it came out. It was terrific. The only good teen film in years.

And yeah this decade has nothing on the nineties. After Scream and Clueless came out, so many teen flicks came out. Like Drive Me Crazy, Can't Hardly Wait, 10 Things, Halloween: H20... they were all amazing and so fun to watch growing up! Election was good too.
