I didn't really care to read this whole thread but if someone already said then I'm saying it again. ;P

I really don't think there was actually any INTENDED incest undertones in the film between the two of them. I just think there might have been an attraction between Eliza Dushku and Jesse Bradford. That's what I think. Cause frankly, as much as I love Kirsten Dunst, there really was no chemistry between her and Jesse Bradford in this movie.

So maybe there might have been a little crushing going on between Eliza Dushku and Jesse Bradford. That's just my theory.

It's funny how almost everything you said crossed my mind. I did think maybe it was probably due to the fact that the actors themselves were attracted to each other and didn't hide it very well. Along with the possibility that it wasn't that Jesse Bradford's character was denying his love for his sister by forcing an unconvincing romance with Torrance but was simply a matter of the actors not having the same chemistry like you said.

I just watched it again and I've kind of changed my mind. I think it was actually intentional on the part of the director. Their relationship was blatantly flirty.

reply

It really wasn't. Do you people even have siblings of a similar age? There is no sexual tension between these two, this is what sibling relationships are actually like.

.

reply

Blatantly flirty. I have two brothers and this is how they act with each other. They tease, they taunt, they bully. I mean jeez, they live together...and they're brother and sister!

It seems like every movie with brother and sister who are around the same age are automatically pinned as incestuous, no matter how they interact with each other...I shudder to think what you'd think of me and my brothers-blech!!! if you guys saw any sexual undertones between the two, then that's just your own dirty minds.

Ha ha. Now you're talking!

It wasn't blatantly incestuous, but I think its very possible for two actors (who are both VERY attractive, and the same age) to have a chemistry/attraction that spills into their characters. Clearly, not every director is going to hire a literal brother and sister (like, John and Joan Cusack in 'Say Anything') so theres a definite possibility that the actors will be attracted to each other. Ansel Elgort and Shailene Woodley play brother and sister in one movie, and a couple in another. Same with Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFayden.

What I'm getting at is - they're actors, not real life siblings. With real siblings, the audience won't feel the 'chemistry' or 'incestuous vibes' because they won't A) have that romantic chemistry B) will look/sound alike to the point where you can tell they're related.

But I genuinely do not believe it was intentional. Remember how disgusted he got when he saw her in a bikini?

reply

No she doesn't.

Ah, no. I don't know what film you were watching, but where she did tease her brother, I didn't detect anything sexual about it.
