Was I the only one who was shocked at Elisabeth forgiving Rolf at the end? After her self-discovery there was more to life than looking after a man, she goes back to her abusive husband. Why is this?

It is not easy for someone like Elisabeth to move on. Remember she was a housewife and didn't work, so definitely would take a long long time before she can get a job and afford a house to live in. Its fun to live in a commune for a while but any sane parent would worry about the welfare of their children.
