Monsters shows why women ask "For what?" when men apologize...
During the scene when Boo saw Sully do his "bit" (to help train new recruits) for the first time she ran away crying in fear and hurt feelings. Sully appropriately runs after her apologizing because he knows something he did has caused her to be upset. He is very sincere in his feelings, not wanting to see this sweet child he is fond of upset -- for any reason. When he catches up to her he's effusive in apologies and genuine concern.
While comforting her, Sully catches a glimpse of the "scare room" screenshots. His face is magnified in full fury, superimposed with the look of absolute terror on Boo's face. It's not until that moment that he "sees" the reason Boo is so upset -- thus he's able to feel his true culpability.
Anyway, that's why women ask "For what" when men issue an apology (or, actually, they employ this with children too, so then there's that...). I just haven't noticed, nor ever experienced, a male asking a female "For what?" following an apology.
Any thoughts?
